After East Texas Betsey and I continued to head East. We had an appointment with Oliver, the maker of our trailer, for our yearly maintenance. We can’t believe it has been almost a year since we bought the Oliver! As we researched the best route to Hohenwald, Tennessee Betsey discovered the Natchez Trace Parkway. The parkway would take us through Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee on our way to the service center. Before we started on our parkway journey we stopped in Louisiana and had an amazing crawfish boil with Betsey’s brother. Wow! It was spicy and amazing and a true welcome to the South ..read more

Arizona Ghost Town and Tombstone One morning as we were exploring and looking for birds along the San Pedro river we found this really cool restored ghost town. The Bureau of Land Management has done a great job restoring the buildings of Fairbank, Arizona and it was really fun to explore the town. The last shop in the town closed in the 1970s. The town had a rail line that was very important for the silver mines in the surrounding area including the infamous town of Tombstone, Arizona. The rail platform was still intact and it was fun to imagine the train pulling in during old west times. We ..read more

You’d never guess this photo was taken in Arizona. On our way from the Phoenix valley to Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas, we started exploring southern Arizona for the first time. One of the highlights was the San Pedro River Valley. Landscapes Arizona is a varied state; it’s not all desert. I’ve spent enough time in northern and eastern Arizona to know that firsthand. But I thought the state’s famous Sonoran Desert extended across southern Arizona to Mexico. Wrong! Turns out the southeast is home to grasslands, forest and the Chihuahuan Desert. You can see what I mean on this illust ..read more

Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s first state park and only a short drive from Las Vegas. It’s proximity to other places we’ve visited, like Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, should have put it on our radar sooner, but no. It wasn’t until we spent a month living in Las Vegas and taking a closer look at the surrounding area that we discovered the park. We first attempted a day-trip on Thanksgiving. If we had been so slow to discover the park, maybe others were as well. After a leisurely morning, we drove along the scenic route from our RV park in Henderson to Valley of Fire, going through La ..read more

After Zion National Park Betsey and I stopped in St. George, Utah. I found a beautiful state park with a lake and great cell signal. State parks typically have better nightly rates than an RV park and a lot more space between neighbors, so we prefer them. This park even had full hook-ups for the win.  Sand Hallow State Park There was a trail for me to run on and Betsey got a some great shots of a hawk while out exploring the park.
