“My favorite animal is steak.” ~ Fran Lebowitz     That above quote has nothing to do with today’s email. I just like it. I apologize for wasting 2 seconds of your time. OK. Let’s get into the real meat and potatoes of today’s message, shall we? Listen, recently I attempted to delve into some research papers penned by social scientists and esteemed psychologists regarding fame, and why people chase it. Well, when I say “delve,” I mean I skimmed through a few pages. It was a test of patience, tolerance, and endurance, let me tell you – as per usual, I failed that test. Did I le ..read more

Dear subscriber, For a brief (very brief) period of my life, I was a professional drummer. I was not a naturally talented drummer. I had to work harder than an ugly stripper to get to the level I achieved. And even that level was not enough to cut it in the unforgivable and fickle playground that is the music industry. Ultimately, I got chewed up, spat out, kicked to the curb, and washed down the drain. I refused to believe it at the time, but I was not supposed to have a drumming career any more than Conor McGregor was supposed to have an acting career. Too bad too sad for me, huh? Oh well… a ..read more

“At the break of dawn, I rouse from sleep, light a cigar, and savor my morning coffee as I delve into the sage and witty writings of Kelvin Dorsey.” ~ Mark Twain   Dear subscriber, When it comes to misattributed quotes… … Mark Twain reigns supreme. Benjamin Franklin would be a close second. Almost half of Mark Twain’s quotes are misattributed. For example, Mark Twain gets all the credit for saying this: “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.” Sounds like Twain, right? Well, it ain’t. That clever line was from a French physicist and writer named Blaise Pascal. L ..read more

The truth is, there are lessons to be gleaned in every situation, every place, and from every thing, and every person. The question is: Are You Looking For Those Lessons? And it’s not just because peopl ..read more

Do You Like Phil Collins?

“Do you like Phil Collins?” ~ Patrick Bateman (American Psycho)   Dear subscriber,   I’m not ashamed to admit, I’m a big Phil Collins fan. People don’t realize how ridiculously talented this guy is. When it comes to sheer musical talent, Phil Collins is painting with a full set of oils while everyone else is busy doodling with crayons. Now, many of you music fans probably know that Phil Collins replaced Peter Gabriel as Genesis’s lead singer. Well, Collins becoming Genesis’s lead singer was like the GFC – nobody saw it coming. Here’s the story: In 1975, Genesis was having in-h ..read more

Let’s Talk About Sales, Baby!

Dear subscriber, You ever heard this sales axiom? “You must believe in your product!” Of course you have. Is it true? Sure it is. However, there’s a caveat. Mull over this: If there is no demand for what you sell, it doesn’t matter what YOU believe. You could sincerely believe your product is the greatest thing since flush toilets. By the way, my “flush toilets” version is far better than the old “sliced bread” saying, eh? Think about it. What would you rather do? Cut your own bread or shovel your own excrement? I rest my case. Now, as I was saying, if nobody wants your product or servi ..read more

Dear subscriber, What makes someone a well-adjusted and compos mentis member of society? Is it their income? Their social status? Their character? Maybe it’s the skill of nodding along to your friend’s conspiracy theories without rolling your eyes, or not knee-jerkily commenting on every online post you disagree with or… resisting the urge to engage in queue rage when some slob cuts the line. Listen, that stuff’s all well and good, but perhaps the better question is this: What is the one trait that all self-aware and successful people (winners) have that losers don’t have?   “I used to play piano by ear, but now I use my hands.” ~ Steven Wright   Dear subscriber, A favorite quote of mine is from the great American football coach Vince Lombardi. He once yelled this: PRACTICE DOES NOT MAKE PERFECT.  PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!! Agreed. Think about it. What happens if you practice something the wrong way? It’s simple: You get really good at doing it the wrong way. No good. Now, below is another quote I like.  It’s from an old English dame you’ve probably heard about. “Amateurs practice till they get it right; professionals practice till the ..read more

Dear subscriber, You should always try and be as logical and rational as humanly possible when making decisions. American billionaire investor, hedge fund manager, and inner circle member (he’s not, but he should be!) Ray Dalio concurs: “Logic, reason, and common sense are your best tools for synthesizing reality and what to do with it.” The reality is, most people have rarely picked up those tools, much less used them. But wise words, nonetheless. But I put to you that there is an area in life where you should kick logic to the curb and pick up and embrace irrationality like a long-los ..read more
