When lobbyists don’t like a law…Or why EU animal welfare was suddenly put on hold
Slow Food

Europeans care deeply about animal welfare. In 2020, 1.4 million EU citizens signed a petition to no longer allow for farm animals to be kept in cages, a campaign that Slow Food actively promoted together with other civil society groups. The call for better animal welfare legislation was supported by the European Parliament and became a “flagship” element of the Farm to Fork strategy. In 2023, the EU Commission set out four new laws to promote animal welfare, but all of a sudden, all but one were dropped from the agenda for 2024.    What happened? Food as a bridge to peace
Slow Food
by Eleonora Giannini

As Slow Food, we condemn all past and current breaches of peace. We envision a world where every human on the planet can access and enjoy good, clean and fair food. But this vision becomes blurred whenever war or political violence breaks out in any part of the world. Food must never be used as a weapon of war. Even when food is not weaponized, conflicts severely affect people’s access to food, rendering futile those efforts to achieve food security for all. While so many communities in war zones and conflict areas struggle every day to produce food and make it accessible to everyone, the abse ..read more

Not only do they produce safe food but also preserve clean water. These methods, which need strengthening and maintenance to overcome the severe crisis in global water resources, can be summarized with one word: agroecology”. Edward Mukiibi, Slow Food president, turns his attention to the existing solutions to try to solve the actual water cri ..read more

Slow Food
by Giulia Capaldi

“The fact that there was no agreement on renewing the authorisation for glyphosate shows there are different understandings and levels of ambitions as to what sustainable food systems look like”, comments Marta Messa, Slow Food Secretary General. The Commission will now refer the vote to the Appeal Committee in the coming weeks. In case of no agreement by the Committee as well, it will be up to the European Commission to decide on the renewal. “We now urgently call on those States which voted in favor of a renewal, and those who abstained, to take into account what citizens really ask for and ..read more
