What’s Wrong with the NHL App’s Development Team?

As much as I love the NHL, I have to say I don’t like the people making decisions about the NHL App on iPad. I’m a paying subscriber to the NHL.TV service and using the NHL App is part of that. The app is great for numbers junkies that love to look at stats or for people that only want to see videos of their favorite players scoring because they can look up the individual goal highlights fairly easily. I do watch games on it whenever I can’t get to my laptop, but I use the app mainly for watching ..read more

Opening day is finally here for the 2019-20 NHL Season. It’s been a long summer… probably too short for the Stanley Cup champion St Louis Blues. That’s a part of hockey history now. It’s time for the 1st games of the new season. Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs Canada’s capital-based Ottawa Senators will visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. Bobby Ryan, Anthony Duclair and the rest of the Senators will try to put an early dent in the Leafs’ quest for the Stanley Cup. Toronto always rocks, and this game will be no exception. Auston Matthews, John ..read more

In this final installment of Rules Changes for the 2019-20 NHL Season, I’ll go over smaller changes that will happen more often than the ones covered in part 1 and part 2. High-Sticking Double Minor Review When a player gets high-sticked and blood is drawn, referees call a double minor penalty. This means the offender must serve 2 consecutive 2 minute penalties. This season referees will have discretion to review high-sticking penalties. They can use this to verify if the stick that hit the player was indeed an opponent’s stick and not the player’s own stick or one of his ..read more

Rules Changes for 2019-2020 NHL Season (Part 2)

Some NHL rules are changing for the 2019-2020 season. In part 1, I discussed the Coach’s Challenge rule, how the current rule has changed, and what they’ve added to it. This post is about the new review for major and match penalties. Major and Match Penalties Major penalties get a player sent to the penalty box for 5 minutes. Unlike a minor penalty, a major penalty doesn’t end if the opponent scores. The entire 5 minutes must be server regardless of how many times the opponent scores. Match penalties are for violations so bad the referees deem that the offending ..read more

Rules Changes for 2019-20 NHL Season (Part 1)

The NHL is revising some rules for the 2019-20 season. They review the rules after every season, introduce new rules, and make small tweaks to others. Several Years Ago One thing they added several years ago was a coach’s challenge for goalie interference calls and offside plays that ended in a goal. I think the goalie interference challenge came from the league getting tired of great goalies flopping around as if another player freight-trained them. (I’m looking at you Dominik Hasek.) It often led to referees that didn’t have a great view of the “freight train” waving off a goal ..read more

The best thing I’ve ever started doing to get exercise was playing ice hockey. I lost weight doing something I loved to do. It increased my cardiovascular health and kept my blood pressure healthy (and I had a crap diet back then so hockey might have even saved my life). No matter how bad a day I have at work, hockey is always something I look forward to and stress melts away once I’m on the ice. Learning to Skate It took me 3 months, skating every day and twice a day on weekends, to learn to skate well enough ..read more

What is Pinching?

Every now and then you’ll hear a hockey announcer or analyst say, “The defenseman pinched in.” What is pinching in hockey?  Is that defenseman going up to another player and pinching his arm or his cheek or something? It’s not that kind of pinch. So what is Pinching? Pinching is basically when a defenseman attacks the opposing puck carrier in an effort to take the puck away and keep it in his own offensive zone. Pinching also occurs when a defenseman tries to get in a passing lane to prevent the other team from breaking out of the zone. When ..read more

First goal celebrations in the NHL are interesting. Some guys don’t know what to do. Some guys just copy their favorite player. Other guys have probably thought about it so long they forgot what they wanted to do and did something else in the excitement of the moment. Most guys skate to the boards near the corner as fast as they can and put their arms up, waiting for teammates to come congratulate them. I like to see those moments because it is almost like the culmination of one of a player’s life-long dreams. Dream #1 – win the Stanley ..read more

In The Goal was 3 Points?, I discussed what individual player points (assists + goals = points) were all about. This post explains what team points are for and how they add up. Standings Hockey standings are based on the number of points a team gets during the regular season. There are 2 conferences made up of 2 divisions each. The top 3 teams in each division make the playoffs. The next 2 top point earners in each conference get a wildcard spot. Each conference sends 8 teams to the playoffs. Points are the main thing that determines if a ..read more

My wife once showed me a friend’s Facebook repost of a blurb about Wayne Gretzky (aka the Great One) and his 11 years younger brother, Brent. The post said they scored a combined 2,861 NHL goals. I told my wife that whoever wrote that doesn’t understand how hockey scoring statistics work. How Do They Work? There are 2 kinds of statistics points a player can get when a goal is scored: Assists Goals How Assists Work When any player touches the puck, they have the possibility of getting an assist. If player 1 passes to player 2, then player 2 ..read more
