T-2. Today was the 45th wedding anniversary of the in-laws and so we were all invited round for lunch to celebrate with them. This is always a boozy occasion…lunch round theirs I mean, not just for the celebration. Everyone was there drinking beer or wine with the meal. Then the cakes come out and they open a spumante. After the coffee there is a glass or 2 of amaro or limoncello…and I carried on drinking water…oh and at one point I really pushed the boat out and had a cup of Earl Grey green tea. Rock n’ Roll!!!! Keith Richards would be proud of me. Only one more full day to go and ..read more

T-3. Getting close now. I’ve seen an ad pop up on my feed about Oktoberfest. I have never been but I’m quite keen on this period of the year. There is a Bavarian themed restaurant/club/pub in Birmingham called the Bierkeller with a thigh-slappin’ Oompah band complete with Lederhosen! I went years ago and remember having a proper good night, slopping beer around and swaying to the band, I think we also ended up dancing on the tables. Any festivities where beer is concerned is a friend of mine. My grandparents were Irish, both from Dublin. Anyone who’s been to Dublin knows what it me ..read more

T minus 4! Actually it’s officially T-5 but today is over with already and I haven’t drunk so I’m counting from tomorrow. Had a lovely swim this morning. Was in the pool by 8.40am and out by 9.15. I remember going to the pool years ago when I was a heavy smoker and drinker and I thought that I had better try to get in shape and that was the only sport I was ever interested in. I clearly remember struggling to do 10 lengths and feeling like a lung had fallen out and was floating around somewhere bumping into people. I think it took me about 30 minutes too! That was when I realised how ..read more

One week to go. Seven full days and one full weekend left. I think I’ve got rid of the brain fog. I’m not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. If I get up at 7am my brain wakes up at around 12…after a couple of strong espressos, that is. I work better later in the day and am more of a night owl (if I’m not working and HAVE to get up early) than a lark. But then again, if I’m on my own I could quite happily slink off to bed at 10.30pm with a good book. And I have to snooze my alarm at least a couple of times before I think about sliding out from between the bed sheets ..read more

Last night I had a beer… It was, in reality, a non-alcoholic Becks Blue and it went down a treat! I’d been at work yesterday and I really, really, really fancied a beer. Luckily, the restaurant we were at just happened to have non-alcoholic beers. We asked them by chance if they sold them and I was expecting them to say no but 30 seconds later there it was, a bottle of ice cold beer in front of me…I was so happy! It’s the taste I’ve missed too and I have to say that I was on the brink of giving up and having a beer (hell, I deserved it!) but that took the edge off. As soon as I took ..read more

We had a team meeting today, then went out to lunch together. Where I would usually order a beer or a glass of wine, I had the obligatory water instead. Naturally the others started asking why I wasn’t drinking (as is the norm) and it came out about the challenge. Some asked me if I felt better, or, at least, different and the answer, honestly, is no! So we started talking about whether a small amount of alcohol is good for you and one of my colleagues talked about a family member being told by the doctor to have a thimble-full of whiskey in the morning…something to do with blood press ..read more

It’s been a busy old week so I haven’t had time to blog until today…and I’m two thirds of the way through – another milestone in the bag. We went out last night to friends’ house and the first thing they asked was ‘want a beer?’. This is doubly frustrating; because of doing this challenge and having to say no, and the fact that they actually produce their own beer…which is really good! One time we tried some of the IPA they’d made and the result was that one person had a brain meltdown and couldn’t think of the words he was trying to say, my boyfriend could only remember English words and ..read more

I have actually stopped thinking about alcohol, I think that’s a good sign. When I stopped thinking about having a fag with a drink on a night out I knew I’d beaten the craving. One thing that is really spurring me on though is the bet I had with my fella: If I manage to not drink for 30 days he has to give €100 to a charity of my choosing. If I don’t manage it I have to give €100 to a charity of his choosing. It’s the in-laws’ 45th wedding anniversary on 29th September, a Sunday, and the likelihood is that they’ll take us out for a meal for lunch, probably at the sea. Now, I’ve alr ..read more

Today I was thinking about my personality when I am, and when I’m not, drinking. Living in another country is quite hard in itself, and anyone who lives in a foreign country and has had to learn the language to get by probably feels the same (I hope I’m not alone!) in that when speaking or trying to speak another language you lose your personality. I can’t make quips and an anecdote kind of gets lost in translation…or people get bored half way through the story because you’re struggling to come up with the vocabulary to explain your point. It’s not snappy enough and what I think I’m tra ..read more
