The warehouse industry faces a plethora of costly challenges. But what if controlling the biggest cost of all – labour – could boost the bottom line in more ways than one?
That’s where workforce management and labour management software comes in. Retailers have long used these systems to control costs and boost productivity for frontline employees. But where warehouses are concerned, it’s an untapped technology that will save labour costs and maximise individual workers’ productivity.

Rising business rates. Fluctuating currency value. Wavering consumer spending. These are just some of the cost pressures facing businesses. As a result, executives are seeking savings from every element of the supply chain including warehouses and DCs.
As a warehouse leader asked to do more with less, which of the following costs should you control first: space, labour or equipment? With your workforce the single biggest operational cost, it makes sense to start there. Particularly as multiple threats – like just-in-time delivery requirements, increased demand and intensity and fluctuating wor ..read more

With happy employees equaling happy customers, it’s no surprise that retailers have focused their workforce management efforts on customer-facing staff. But as more revenue moves online, effectively managing your warehouse and distribution centre (DC) workforce has never been more important.
Of all the resources in your warehouses and DCs, your people have the greatest capacity for agility, innovation and growth. But you’ll only get back what you put in.
At a time when retailers are facing challenges on all fronts, it’s more important than ever to focus on treating your employees well. I ..read more

The Covid-19 pandemic has created the conditions for a radical rethink of the relationship between retailers and their employees. These are the frontline retail workers (FRWs) who – alongside NHS, care home and logistics employees – stepped up to support us all through a dramatic change in circumstances.
The polarised retail sector has already made swift and significant adaptations. In the face of a major recession, how retailers define the future employer-employee relationship will be key to the success of the retail sector. And the wider economy too.

When someone talks about “getting back to normal” in a post-pandemic world, what comes to mind? The distribution of a vaccine? Reaching herd immunity? A return to how things were before but with more social distancing?
In retail, the idea of “getting back to normal” is a strange one. Retailers are advised not to strategize this way. There is no going back now, because consumers have already built new routines around their pandemic-era habits.
In 2009, the University College of London published a study in which they found that it takes an average of 66 days to form a habit. In the U ..read more

As the UK transitions from lockdown to the new normal, and the government begins to allow retail stores and hospitality venues to open, it’s critical that businesses respond to the guidance on how to open safely. Staff won’t return to stores where they don’t feel safe and consumers will react negatively if they don’t believe retailers are following instructions. Plus, any deviation from the guidelines will have serious consequences for your business.
Two fundamental aspects of the government’s advice relate to scheduling and communications.
1 – Retailers must have scheduling processes th ..read more

It’s impossible to escape the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on both physical and online retail. Different verticals have been impacted in various ways – be it a dramatic and unprecedented surge in demand for groceries, declining volumes in fuel retail, the complete closure and loss of revenue for hospitality or the entire shift online for ‘non-essential’ retail like fashion. The unavoidable truth is that the world has changed. And I believe retailers need to respond with greater flexibility to succeed in this strange new world.

When rules around facemasks are fluctuating faster than a flimsy fitting room curtain, retail leaders need a concise and consistent approach to communicating change.
It’s not just facemask policy that’s in flux of course. As we gingerly tread on post-Covid ground, the working approaches we took for granted last year are constantly shifting today.
How retailers engage with and communicate change to employees influences not only how rapidly the virus is controlled, but how effectively retailers serve the public, recover lost revenue and reconfigure their stores for a succ ..read more
