The Keys to Authentic Leadership

When we think of leaders who inspire us, how often do we focus on their strengths and what they are doing right? Do we stop to see the places where they shifted, learned, and grew from a failure? How important is it to understand our shortcomings? Good leaders know themselves, their strengths, and weaknesses. While they certainly play to their strengths, they are not afraid to dig into the places where they are not as strong. There is a keen desire to uncover opportunities for growth. They also recognize that while growth is possible, working with others for whom these characteristics are stre ..read more

A Definition of Success

It is fun to follow leadership discussion groups. I am always amazed at some of the questions and responses. Recently someone asked, “What does success mean to you?” I know it is a very individual question; however, I am always amazed at how some people still look outward to external things to find success. We need to go inward, we need to find our Dharma; we need to create alignment between our Dharma and ourselves; personal actions, behaviours and the energy we put out into the world. New World Leaders understand the concept of alignment and work to truly listen to their inner voice, their g ..read more

A recent project with a client to create an engaged and accountable corporate culture is taking their leadership and their organization on an enlightening journey. The leadership team are living and embodying the curiosity which they explored in their Transformational Leadership process. Knowing that culture is created based on how beliefs, behaviours, and actions are embodied by leadership, and wanting to ensure that engagement and shared values are part of this new collective culture of accountability, these leaders are finding themselves asking new questions and in new ways. They are reflec ..read more

Curiosity – A Place of Untapped Growth Part 1

When Alice fell down the rabbit hole, she set off on an adventure that would lead her to make the statement, “Curiouser and Curiouser!” With each new discovery and the more curious that she became, the more curious and stranger Wonderland seemed to her. She did more than step out of her comfort zone and did more than ask standard questions to get basic information, and the dialogue of Lewis Carroll’s classic is anything but straightforward. How often as leaders do we miss opportunities to explore and grow with our team and with our organization because our questions are looking for ‘just the f ..read more

What’s Holding You Back?

What if I told you that each one of us is intended to live an extraordinary life? A life that is completely unique and incredible. I truly believe this, but I also believe that most of us are being held back from living this extraordinary life. Depending on where we are in our journey, what holds us back will be different. Some of us are held back by roadblocks we have placed along the way. We believe we are supposed to look after everyone else and take care of everything. We volunteer way beyond our capacity, we are completely involved in our children and/or parents’ lives, or we have people ..read more

Why Is Leadership Development So Hard?

Everything we have ever known about leadership and management is being challenged. Our hard-wired beliefs about how to improve performance and create engagement is being pushed to the limits every day of every week. Leadership Development is a completely new game if you want to have a sustainable transformational impact that is felt at every level. Here are just a few of the things we are being challenged with. Tell vs. Sell vs. Simply Make a Connection We have moved from a tell mentality to a sell (buy-in) mentality to one that is about making a real connection. A leader’s ability to make a m ..read more

The Power of Vulnerability in Leading Self

When we think of leadership, and leadership development, how often do we think about power and strength, rather than vulnerability? Power and strength are seen as assets and vulnerability as a liability. But is that really the case? Are we missing out on transformational and powerful leadership by not addressing, and exploring our vulnerability as leaders? Traditionally leadership development focuses on how to lead others, but how can we do something for others, if we can’t even do it for ourselves first? Transformational Leadership is more than ‘practice what you preach’ or modelling behaviou ..read more

Authentic Relationships in the Workplace

When I was researching the factors and catalysts of employee engagement, I met a young man who knew exactly what he wanted from his employer. Keep it real, he said: “I have no misconceptions about my role in this company. I am here to be productive and to make money for the organization. What I ask in return is to have real relationships at work.” This is not exceptional anymore. Many of the young people I speak with want a work environment that is free of bureaucracy, red tape and need-to-know-only attitudes. They want transparency and authentic relationships. I have heard “don’t spin it” mor ..read more

Balance

I have been reading and following the discussion on Stress and Work Life Balance in today’s business context.  I find the commentary fascinating.  Especially the comment by one CEO’s that “Work Life Balance is not a corporate issue but a personal issue”. As someone who works in the field of employee engagement, commitment and loyalty I see first-hand the impact of a scale dipped in favour of the employer. When employees are given 14 hours of work and expected to complete it in 8 hours we have an immediate imbalance.  Time after time I see unrealistic expectations being made ..read more
