Our Reefscapers teams have had a very busy year, ably assisted by our enthusiastic apprentices and interns. Initially, we worked hard to try to mitigate against the effects of the forecasted elevated ocean temperatures during the global coral bleaching event. Over recent months, we have been documenting the issues, surveying the damage, and re-transplanting new coral fragments onto dead frames, with increasing signs of recovery.

Join us out in Landaa's Lagoon, for the re-opening of our large turtle rehabilitation enclosure, allowing our turtle patients to practise diving and build muscle mass before release back into the ocean.
We have school visits, apprenticeship training, and a Science Symposium in Malé City this month, as well as a host of wonderful marine life on the reefs.

Our marine programme for students from around Baa Atoll was a huge success in 2023, so we repeated the popular event this year.
We aim to inspire the next generation of marine biologists, teaching marine conservation and sustainability in a fun & engaging way, to emphasise the importance of coral reefs and biodiversity.

After a few weeks assisting at our Turtle Rescue Centre, it was time to focus on the corals, to prepare for the bleaching event that was about to hit the Maldives and the whole Indian Ocean region.
We started our regular monitoring tasks, looking for signs of bleaching on colonies of different Acropora species. I was allocated the reef crest area, which is my favourite location because the reef slope allows you to see different species of sharks, our resident hawksbill turtles, and even some curious eagle rays.

? The Maldives is experiencing high ocean temperatures, putting corals at risk of bleaching. Our Reefscapers coral experts are making huge efforts to relocate the most vulnerable coral frames to deeper, cooler waters.
? Our turtle rescue centres are at capacity. Oekaashi is recovering from a carapace injury, and Thari is receiving weight treatments for 'buoyancy syndrome'.

? Our mariculture projects are progressing well in the Fish Lab, and we launch a new sea urchin breeding project.
? Our coral experts are busily monitoring for bleaching, and work has started to relocate our most vulnerable reefs.
? Marine presentations and guided excursions have been popular this month - we continue to educate about sharks, and manta season has (un)officially started at Kuda Huraa!

The world's oceans have been heating up at an alarming rate over the last decade. This year, the El Nino event has increased temperatures even further, and the hottest 'summer' months in the Maldives bring additional heat stress to coral reefs.
Our teams are closely monitoring the reefs, looking for signs of coral stress (paling and fluorescing) and attack by predators (hungry snails and starfish).
