I’ve been creating so many things in my little sewing studio at home, buying so much fabric and materials that I’m starting to lose track of all the projects I’m making. I decided to get a little more organized, so I created myself a little Sewing Project worksheet based on how I work that includes the materials and sewing notions I need, a sketch or picture of what I intend to make, any necessary skills I need to learn in order to complete the project, as well as some swatches of fabric I could use. I haven’t officially used my new system yet, but I’m going to give it a go and I will share m ..read more

Victorian Inspired Dress

August is going to be the month of getting out of my comfort zone. I started a new health regime and I said YES to doing a talk on “Power Dressing” at the Nia Azuri Beauty Spa “A Woman’s Worth” event. I knew I just had to make myself a one-of-a-kind dress to wear to the talk. It is inspired by the Victorian era – my favourite fashion era, might I add – and I’m so inlove with the detail and the high necklines. I tried my hand at a fabric manipulation technique called “pin tucks” and I’m so amazed at how these turned out on my dress! Dresses are my favourite piece of clothing, mostly because yo ..read more

I made a coat for my Mom

I’ve been very anti-social on social media lately. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it may have something to do with the immense loss I’ve experienced earlier this year due to my Dad’s passing. I’m doing a lot better now, and have slowly but surely started sewing my way into a better mood again. I have tons of sewing projects and activities going on behind the seams, but I thought I would share the very first coat I made since it’s a huge milestone for me on this sewing journey! It’s an unlined jacket using a Simplicity pattern designed by Mimi G Style. I love her patterns so much and whe ..read more

Reviewing the Tailor’s Friend® dressmaker form from Figure Forms

When I was approached by Figure Forms to send me one of their Tailor’s Friend® dressmaker forms, I was immediately on board. I have always wanted a proper dressmaker form ever since I saw the contestants of Project Runway draping their designs on them. Speaking of this show, did you know that this popular Tailor’s Friend® form was featured on Project Runway South Africa? Pretty awesome, right? Local is lekker! Before I get started, I’d like to tell you a little bit about Figure Forms. They are manufacturers of dressmaker and designer forms, fit mannequins and display torsos. When I first visi ..read more

DIY Teddy Cardigan

In this DIY I show you how to make a cozy teddy cardigan with lining. It’s winter here in Cape Town and I just had to make myself this comfy yet stylish piece. I used to own a teddy cardigan, but I gave it away (goodness knows why I would do such a thing), and I have regretted it ever since. Nonetheless, my DIY skills came to the rescue! I’ve been in a bit of a social media rut for the past 6 or 7 months. I’ve been feeling over the whole posting online about this ‘n that and very anti-blogging and vlogging. Instead, I’ve retreated into my little creative cave here at home, indulging in DIY pr ..read more

10 ways to get out of a rut

We have all been there at some point in our lives – feeling like it’s groundhog day… where everything is the same and you’re pretty much just getting through the day – sleeping, eating, working and so the cycle continues… you have zero motivation, you lack fulfilment, tasks that should fill you with delight all seem so mundane and just meh, and you really, really want to make a change, but you’re so scared of getting out of your comfort zone that you end up stuck in a godforsaken rut. For me, this moment is still in session, but I am slowly but surely clawing my way out of this major slump an ..read more

These past few months have been rough. My Dad passed away just before the New Year and I was crushed. I still am, crushed. And I don’t think I will ever be the same. It’s been a tough few months, but I am finally at a place where I’m feeling better, and ready to be myself again. So much has happened since I last posted on this blog. I don’t wanna get into any details, but rather, share with you a highlight of my 2018. I celebrated my 36th birthday in October last year, and I decided to finally get the sewing machine I’ve been saving up for since I first started working on one a few years ago ..read more

In this DIY I show you how to make a half circle skater dress. When I found this stunning floral print in a scuba knit, I knew I just had to make myself this skater dress. It can be dressed up or down depending on how you accessorize it – making it the perfect piece to transition from lunch with the girls to date night with a special someone! Check out this post where I made the same dress, but in a dark floral. DIY Tartan Skirt

In this DIY I show you how to make a flat front and elasticated back waistband gathered tartan skirt with pockets – what a mouthful! I’m usually more of a circle skirt girl, but I really wanted a poofy tartan skirt, hence using the gathered technique. Looking back now, I wish I had made it midi length to add more drama to my look, but, not to worry, I have some more tartan prints that I could experiment with! And I just had to add pockets, because they are pockets, I mean, who doesn’t love pockets? This is also the first time I tried a flat front with elasticated back waistband combo and I mu ..read more

Plaid

The older I get, the more I find myself wanting to invest in fewer wardrobe staples. Gone are the days where I had a closet full of clothes and yet I still had nothing to wear. I’ve learned the hard way that too much of something is not good. It leaves you feeling overwhelmed and it’s not a good feeling. It’s literally baggage, and I refuse to lug around things I don’t love. This is why I’m rather making pieces like this plaid dress. It’s such a simple pattern, yet I feel super cute in it! I could make loads of the same dress in many different fabrics, add a pair of booties and I’m a happy gi ..read more
