Routinely dismissed by film critics as a lesser genre artistically, romantic comedies aren't simply traditionally beloved, but also a true art form which has produced some of the most classic and enduring films we know today. For fervent fans of romantic comedy films, how can lessons in love from these movies be applied to their own lives?
Dating coach Lily Womble sees them as a chance to take back your power and live your life with intention. Rom Coms is a movie genre that I hate and love. Love for happy endings and hate for some horrible traits behind how they get together. Serendipity is one of many romantic comedies that I hate and love. Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) reach for the same pair of black gloves in the New York department store and it was an initial great meet-cute. But we found out both were in relationships, and Jonathan forgot the gloves were for his girlfriend while having some sundaes with Sara at the Serendipity cafe—already a red flag.

It’s been almost 20 years since the release of Gary Hardwick’s The Brothers.
Morris Chestnut, Shemar Moore, D.L. Hughley, and Bill Bellamy make up this all-star quartet in the cinematic classic about four lifelong friends taking on the complexities of love, sex, friendship, commitment and honesty.
I know, romantic comedies are the least favorite among the guys and are frowned upon. They can sometimes be corny, too mushy, over the top and unrealistic. But the fellas need not to worry. I can assure that you won’t lose any credibility here and will be speaking a different tone af ..read more

Calling on the classic star-crossed love motif, Pretty in Pink(1986) centers around Andie (Molly Ringwald), a poor high schooler who falls for wealthy and popular classmate, Blane (Andrew McCarthy). As their love blossoms, Blane is pressured by peers, such as insensitive classmate Steff (James Spader), to stick to the status quo and remain affiliated with his privileged circle of friends. Meanwhile, Andie navigates difficulties in her home life, including her father’s (Harry Dean Stanton) distress over her mother’s abandonment of the family. Along the way, Andie’s record s ..read more

In the world of rom-com, we are all familiar with the go to titles for when we want a nice and familiar story. So, we go and watch Bridget Jones for the one hundredth time. Or Sixteen Candles, and imagine what it would have been like if our teenage years were that magical and that our school crush liked us back, but that did not happen did it Sharon?!. Truth is, some movies just do not get old and watching them over and over again does not get boring, not for me at least. Finding new good rom-coms has become a little difficult in my opinion, and I am often disappointed by watching an overly pr ..read more

Earlier this year, I published the book Build Your Own Romantic Comedy: Pick Your Plot, Meet Your Man, and Direct Your Happily Ever After, a humor book that is both send up of - and an homage to - all of our favorite romantic comedies from the ‘90s and 2000s. But here’s the real hook: You, the reader, get to choose what happens.
People sometimes ask me how I went about writing a build-your-own-romantic-comedy book, and as it turns out, it’s pretty similar to writing an actual romantic comedy - just, you know, a little sillier and many different potential plotlines.
As you probably know - and m ..read more

We’re still technically in fall, so let’s enjoy it for as long as we can!
In romantic comedy BABY BOOM (1987), J.C. Wiatt (Diane Keaton) is a smart businesswoman in New York City who’s about to make partner when a relative dies and names her as his baby’s caretaker. Her work setting is unfriendly towa ..read more
