We made it to the end of the year
And What Else?

So we made it... somehow through the odds and the weirdest year in a while we got to the end. It’s the end of the year!! What can we say? – but well done. We’ve survived. We can only hope for better next year.  Time for a few reflections? I think we’ve all felt the stress of world events in 2020, right through to our very core. I’m not going to list them, but the level of negative and stressful news has really taken its toll. It’s been super tough mentally, so if you’re reading this – you’ve really earned your winter festive break.  Take time out in the next few weeks to rest, recov ..read more

So we made it... somehow through the odds and the weirdest year in a while we got to the end of the year. What can we say – but well done. Amazing. We’ve survived.  Time for a few reflections? I think we’ve all felt the stress of world events in 2020, right through to our very core. I’m not going to list them, but the level of negative and stressful news has really taken its toll. It’s been super tough mentally, so if you’re reading this – you’ve really earned your winter break.  Take time this year to rest, recover, recharge and do all those things that make you feel like a person ..read more

Weather and News this week
And What Else?
by Mike

Do you remember in school where your Teacher asked to write your news after a holiday or half-term? It was a bit like the content you put in your thank-you letters between ‘thank-you for my present…’ and an update on the weather. …well, that’s pretty much how mine used to work. Hopefully I said something of interest occasionally! I don’t have an article or topic, but it’s been an amazing week, so I’m just going to go with ‘my news’ and see where that ends up. New people this week This week I had an online meeting with Nelson Mandela’s body guard. I count that as an unusual occurrence in my ci ..read more

Side projects success
And What Else?
by Mike

During Lock-down I have really waded in on a side-hustle type of project I started a few months ago. I thought I would share some details, give some thanks and say a few words about its success. If you have a side-project, great to hear about it and keep going – launch it, get it over the line, make it a thing soon. Side-hustle projects If you work in Digital or have a Creative persona, it’s really good to have a side-hustle project. I realised I have some great friends who do this and it really enhances their work and knowledge in the field they are in, plus it’s fun and a good creative outl ..read more

The Inevitable lockdown post
And What Else?
by Mike

It’s pretty inevitable – the post about how you’re doing during Lockdown. What have you been able to do more of? What are you missing? What will you continue to do after the world opens up again? So – let’s keep it short and not too reflective… Biggest challenges? For me, being at home with my family 24/7 has been pretty tough alongside continuing to work at an increased pace. Demand for digital work has increased and the need for lunch, tea and teaching has been a big pull on my time. So two jobs – only one me. I guess the role conflict that normally exists as a working parent got magnified ..read more

Dogs in the office
And What Else?
by Mike

I’ve recently visited a number of offices where dogs are allowed in the office. It’s a growing trend to have animals at work. They add some fun, a good conversation point and perhaps have a soothing effect on employees. It’s great to see employers taking a more relaxed stance to their work environment. I’m guessing anyone with allergies is also catered for, as not everyone is animal friendly. Perhaps they have a dog-free visitors zone. GRRrrRr? Dogs are interesting idea though for improving the working environment. Maybe employers will make other concessions in the future. Perhaps a quiet are ..read more

Platform nine and three quarters
And What Else?

Sometimes in life and your career you are at Kings-cross station and all you can see is platforms Nine and Ten. Prescribed choices are limited and maybe none of them look like the way you want to proceed. Yet, you know inside that what you really want is something else. It’s not an obvious choice or path, but if you stay where you are (living with the Dursleys…) you’re not going to be in a happy place. If you take the obvious paths, those don’t exactly take you where you need to go either. So – you know what to do. Close your eyes and walk quickly towards your real destination. Thanks for a bi ..read more

Life hacks and new perspectives
And What Else?

Several influential people (I have a collection of good ones, who I like to spend time with) have recently mentioned Tim Ferris. So, I did a little research… Tim Ferris is the author of ‘The Four hour working week” – a noteworthy book on productivity. He’s a coach, an experimenter, a business investor, an author and an improver. There are clearly some things we could all learn from him. What I liked about his approach to learning (he has clearly studied some NLP) is his thoughts on modelling (learning by copying successful people). Many coaches recommend reproducing other people’s success to a ..read more
