Quay Crew

For any yacht charter Captain, perfecting the guest meet and greet is paramount to maximise the success of the forthcoming cruise. But if you’re a Captain who is used to working on private vessels for a long period, meeting strangers for the first time in a foreign environment will be unfamiliar territory. When travelling to an airport to meet your owner, you might simply introduce yourself to any friends, exchange pleasantries, update them on the weather and itinerary, and most importantly, find out when they would like to eat. Or, it presents the ideal opportunity to update them on the crew ..read more

Maximising success on Yotspot
Quay Crew
by Bekah Edenbrow

The deepest recorded ocean depth is 10,935m, a number which isn’t too far off the number of yacht crew applications we get for each Yotspot job we post. I get it, when looking for your first or next role onboard, it is easy to fall into the trap of ‘quantity over quality’, applying for each advert that mentions Deckhand, Stew or whatever role you are looking for, regardless of whether or not you possess the relevant experience or qualifications. After all, in a market saturated with opportunities, it might seem like a numbers game—apply to enough positions, and eventually, something will stick ..read more

Are you a multitasking or task-switching superyacht leader?
Quay Crew

Former Captain-turned-executive coach, Brendan P O’Brien, discusses one of the main challenges of being a superyacht leader – multitasking. There are days as a Captain where structure and planning prevail. Then there are those days when, as a superyacht leader, I would feel stretched thin; trying my best to delegate and multitask my way through the work. We can all recognise these days – those that start off so well and then a simple a knock at the door or a telephone call, a message or email, requires our immediate attention. Some days I would have space for this and on another, I might not ..read more

Quay Crew
by Tom Rose

I have spent the past six years working in crew recruitment and have made hundreds of placements in this time, but it still strikes me how very few people know how to effectively communicate with yacht crew agencies. This is true not just with yacht crew candidates, but also clients, and this blog highlights what we need from you in order to maximise success in both your job and candidate search. Yacht crew candidates Pre-placement Effective communication with yacht crew agencies is first and foremost about honesty. Be completely transparent about what you are looking for in your next role as ..read more

Crew mental health – The state of the superyacht sector 2024
Quay Crew
by Charlotte Flake
2M ago
The superyacht sector is moving in the right direction when it comes to crew mental health, albeit at a snail’s pace according our latest survey. Following the 2021 survey among 1,000+ crew, we repeated the research in an attempt to monitor whether any headway is being made. The new survey, which collected almost 900 responses at the latter end of 2023, reveals that more yachts are putting policies, practices and services in place to support crew who may suffer from poor mental health. However, these top-level efforts are yet to have a significant impact on overall crew wellbeing, with very s ..read more
