The return of group running!
Mum Run Repeat

As the restrictions of Lockdown 3.0 start to ease this week in England, it is so good to be able to run in groups again. I don’t think I’ll realise how much I’ve missed my running family until I see them at the track, on training runs and on my favourite run of the week – the Sunday, off-road run and chat. And it’s that Sunday run I’m looking forward to the most – it’s in written in my diary with stars and squiggles around it. It’s the one where we put the world to rights, share problems and ridiculously funny (and sometimes completely inappropriate) stories. We don’t stick to an agreed pace a ..read more

RED January – why I’ve signed up for it again
Mum Run Repeat

I’ve just signed up for RED January for the second year running (do you see what I did there?). To some, running every day in what is often the most miserable, cold, dark month of the year may seem a bit bonkers – and perhaps it is? But it is also a great motivator to get up off the sofa, get active and find some space for you. And with the craziness of 2020, I think we all need a little bit of space for ourselves. I chose to run every day last January and (injury-permitting) I plan to do the same this year. A minimum of a mile a day either outside or on the treadmill is the target. But the ch ..read more

Couch 2 5K – not just for beginners
Mum Run Repeat

I want to talk Couch 2 5K. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s Public Health England’s online training programme to get you from walking to running 5K in about nine weeks. Use soared during lockdown with 858,000 reported downloads between March and June 2020. It’s a great tool for people new to running as over three sessions a week you build steadily from running one minute on, one minute off in the first week. Warm ups and cool downs are included in each session and you can choose your trainer – from celebrated Olympian Michael Jordon, to my favourite comedian, Sarah Millican. However, peopl ..read more

Lost your running mojo? Try virtual racing
Mum Run Repeat

Us runners run for a variety of reasons. To stay fit, lose weight, get headspace etc etc. But some do it for the bling. That lovely bit of shiny stuff on the end of a thick ribbon that says you’ve run the race and claimed your reward. But what do you do when the races have been cancelled and there is no date in sight for them restarting? Go virtual of course! There are loads of virtual races out there. From virtual versions of your favourite events, to organisations offering races and challenges covering a range of distances, many supporting charities. And if you are a member of a running club ..read more

Running to stay normal and exploring
Mum Run Repeat

In these strange times it’s helpful to have a constant from my previous life and running is that ‘normal’ thing for me. Every other part of my life has changed – my girls are at home and not at school, or after-school club, or swimming, or dancing; my work is now in my spare room, with meetings conducted over the web; my husband has been ‘furloughed’; I haven’t see my family in ‘real life’ for weeks… but I’m still running. True, I’m not meeting my friends every Sunday to run the local trails, our club training has stopped and the spring and early summer races I had signed up for have been canc ..read more

Two sleeps ‘til Equinox 24
Mum Run Repeat

On Saturday I take on my first ever 24 hour race. Six weeks ago I had a massive wobble about this. What was I thinking? I haven’t properly camped since I was a kid (I’m not counting the glamping pod I stayed in last month where the only inconvenience was the bathroom being about six foot away in a separate pod). I also like my sleep… really like my sleep. If I don’t get around eight hours a night I am pretty grumpy. The running was also an issue. You run as many or few 10k laps as you want to. I’m quite good at running for a long time, especially when I can walk a bit and stop for a coffee ..read more

The next challenge

This Sunday I’m walking the three peaks in North Yorkshire. This is feeling strangely outside my comfort zone. I would definitely feel more comfortable running it. I’ve bought a whole new set of kit – walking boots, walking trousers, rucksack, waterproof, walking poles etc etc. I need to work out what food and water I can carry. I’m checking the weather forecast every hour or so (so far it’s looking fairly dry) to see if I need to buy waterproof trousers. And then there’s the actual walking. I don’t do a lot of actual walking. I walk the kids to school, I walk to the local shops and I walk aro ..read more

I ran a flippin’ marathon!
Mum Run Repeat

These are not quite the exact words I said as I crossed the finish line of the Greater Manchester Marathon yesterday. After 26.2 miles (or 26.43 according to Garmin) I crossed the line and immediately wanted to sign up for another one. (Quite a contrast from my first marathon 17 years ago when I never wanted to run again, let alone run this distance again!). The race itself was well-organised and incredibly well-supported and I had a great time high-fiving kids, and running along to the choirs, bands and music along the way. Running-wise, things didn’t go to plan. A couple times during ..read more

Time to taper

After the 20 mile race last Sunday, it’s finally time for me to reduce the mileage in the final three weeks before the big day. All the really hard work is done and now I can sit back and really get nervous! And to be honest, I’m pretty knackered and this taper hasn’t come soon enough. I’ve stuck fairly rigidly to my plan, with a few minor glitches and adaptations. I’ve worked hard and seen progress – a PB at half marathon distance and 10-minue improvement between my first 20-miler and the second. But it has come at a price. I have turned down invitations or left early so I was fresh fo ..read more

Marathon training: no drama, just putting in the miles
Mum Run Repeat
by Caroline Richardson

Ran with the club last night – first time in a couple of weeks –and really enjoyed catching up with friends and running with the pack. Some wanted to know how the marathon training was going and one commented that I seemed to be just getting on with it. I breathlessly (start of the run and just getting into a rhythm) replied that I was just putting in the training and that it was tough but going well. “So no drama then? Marathon training always has its dramas.” she asked. (I should add that she is an experienced runner and has run many races up to marathon distance.) This made me think ..read more
