It’s been a bit of a lazy week, as we recently got back from a
whirlwind trip to New Orleans.
It was a work trip for Mike. He has an interesting job, so his
work always takes him (us) to interesting places.
You are probably wondering what we did with Azzy.
I didn’t want to just leave him at somebody’s house, because I
think it’s unrealistic to expect somebody to never leave their house the entire
time that Azzy’s there. At the same time, I didn’t want him kenneled. Luckily,
Los Angeles is teeming with everything that one could possibly desire for one’s
furry best friend, and I manag ..read more

I miss the ocean. My entire family does. We’re not exactly landlocked now, but we can’t walk to the beach, either, so it always requires a degree of planning.
Since we got Azzy, I’ve been scouring L.A.’s beaches in the quest
to find a dog-friendly one — preferably one that doesn’t require a leash.
The sun wasn’t out in full force, which was perfect. My big, happy boy requires exercise, and I won’t allow him to drag me behind him like a rag doll, so off-leash is definitely preferable.
Where are the dog-friendly beaches in Los Angeles?
I soon discovered there is a woeful lack of dog ..read more

The last stop on our dog-friendly Franklin Village expedition is the highly esteemed Bourgeois Pig coffee shop.
The Bourgeois Pig is located at the corner of Franklin and Tamarind avenues. The plan was to go last Wednesday, but it was 92 degrees outside!
I was really looking forward to going that day (I run this blog like a
well-oiled, on-schedule machine), but I draw the line at anything higher than
90 degrees. You just have to put your foot down at some point.
Perfectly overcast day
The following day was forecast at a partly cloudy high-80s day. I
looked at the forecast for the rest ..read more

You better really like your poultry if you’re going to a restaurant called Birds.
This week, our flock is merrily continuing Azzfest, our westerly tour of Franklin Village, as we continue our quest for dog-friendly restaurants in Los Angeles.
Birds was our next stop.
Birds is a popular Franklin Village hangout.Birds is a pretty popular hangout among my neighbors. I see them posting about it on social media all the time, and my curiosity about this place has been piqued for a long time.
We decided to make our maiden voyage here during happy hour, as is our wont.
The food prices ..read more

(PSA: From one of my neighbors on Nextdoor – Something people don’t often think about is when they’re taking their furry family member for a walk on a day where it’s 80-plus degrees outside or higher, the pavement can burn the paws of an animal very quickly, so if you can’t handle putting your hand flat on the pavement or your bare feet, neither can they.
Additionally, dead brown grass produces more heat than green grass, so keep that in mind if you think your dog standing on dead brown grass will prevent any type of heat exposure to their paws.)
Azzfest continues …

I wrote
about La Poubelle last time, and I thought it might be cool if we meandered
west through Franklin Village and eventually crescendoed at the Bourgeois Pig
de résistance — my high school haunt!
People usually don’t even know that Azzy is lurking under the table.
Dogs are
pretty much welcome at any establishment along this part of Franklin, so we
will just have to visit them all, one by one.
Is that
cheating?
Mike
said, “It’s your battlefield; you define cheating.”
I like
that.

So we
will mosey on down the block and hit all of them up — most likely during ..read more

This week, we decided to brave the treacherous four-minute walk down Franklin Avenue and visit La Poubelle.
We had some valid reasons:
It’s French (see my last two blogs). The lady sitting at the table next to us on Father’s Day last week recommended it, and she didn’t know I was a blogger, or what I even blog about. We just started talking about our dogs, and she randomly asked if we had ever been to La Poubelle. I told her it was already on my list, but it’s a really good sign to have someone mention it right away as a dog-friendly place. One of my readers — who also happens to be a nei ..read more

The way I found our anniversary
bistro-that-I’m-not-going-to-review-because-Azz-wasn’t-there was by googling
“French restaurants near me.”
This was also how I happened to find out about Figaro Bistrot,
which does allow dogs, so guess who’s going to Les Feliz
for Father’s Day?!?!?
But first I have to tell you something funny.
This is just a gratuitous photo of Azzy!
Last week, Mike was walking to the park with Azzy. A car drove by, honked, and somebody yelled out, “Best in show! Wooooooooh!”
So they get to the park, and somebody who was there yells, “You
did it!”
Mike: “Huh ..read more

Mike and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last weekend. Twelve years of (usually) wedded bliss!
Mike and I had an intimate beach wedding in Kona in 2007
We got
married in Hawaii — Kona, specifically — in order to avoid all the usual wedding-day
malarkey. I really don’t like the idea of making a huge fuss about something
that’s going to be parsed, processed and imprinted onto my mind as a vague
blur.
And
figuring out where to seat everybody? PLEASE.
I
remember reading that weddings were more stressful than divorces or funerals,
and I’m just not going out like that.
Here we ar ..read more

Damn! We missed National Burger Day by less than a week!
Save the date for next year!
Poor
planning notwithstanding, Stout Burgers & Beers is one neighborhood joint
that we have to include on our list for a visit any day of the week (even on a
Taco Tuesday), but since we were oh-so-close to this holiest of holidays, I
switched my list up a bit.
Full
disclosure: I am on Stout’s mailing list, and they are the ones who notified me
about National Burger Day on May 28 — right as I was readying last week’s
Memorial Day blog. I have an ordered list of dog-friendly places I want to
