Fluffy Delight Pistachio Marshmallow Salad Sweet Side or Dessert From my vintage recipe archives… here is a recipe from my Aunt Ann which I have not made in years and I don’t know why as I love this dish. Almost as much as her Banana and Grape Nuts Homemade Ice Cream (drooling)! Pistachio Marshmallow Salad is sometimes called a Watergate Salad or Green Fluff and is similar to another American classic, Ambrosia Salad. It can be served as a sweet side dish or as dessert or, in a pinch, for breakfast! Aunt Ann used toasted pecans but walnuts or pistachios would be just as tasty. I layer this sal ..read more

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Potatoes Lemon Mashed Potatoes Side Lemon mashed potatoes where have you been all my life? Wow! We were blown away by the citrusy deliciousness of these mashed potatoes. They are next level and so simple and are, of course, from the Barefoot Contessa. I have Ina’s modern comfort food cookbook and despite all the recipes I tagged to make, for some reason this was not one of them.Lemon mashed potatoes would be a perfect accompaniment for an early spring brunch, your Easter dinner or any time when you can get your hands on a Meyer lemon. I have served these with a ..read more

If You Knew Sushi Like I Know Sushi Sushi Bake Casserole Main or Starter I love a good California roll so when I saw this recipe in the New York Times described as a deconstructed California roll, I was in. But first I had to track down a few ingredients I had not cooked with before. First on the list, Kewpie Mayonnaise, a tangy creamy Japanese mayonnaise. As described in this article from Bon Appetit: “While American mayonnaise uses whole eggs, Kewpie mayo incorporates yolks and yolks alone for a yellow color, an almost custardy texture, and distinctly rich and fatty mouthfeel. The egg yolks ..read more

Stunning Centro Histórico Dining Azul Histórico – Mexico City April 2023 One of the best things about our marvelous Mexico City trip included the number of fantastic dining experiences we encountered, and we had many. After our first full day of exploring Mexico City’s Centro Histórico, it was time for our first Centro Histórico meal.  Azul Histórico (Isabel La Católica 30) is one of three Azul restaurants in Mexico City, and the dining room is stunning. It’s located on the ground floor of the Plaza Down Town, which is known as the Palace of the Counts of Miravalle. We heard this pla ..read more

Revisiting An Old Favorite Norton Simon Museum – Pasadena, CA Last Visited: August 2023 & January 2024 It had been some time since Tracy and I had visited one of our favorite local art museums, so when my childhood friend Denny visited us from Canada, we decided to take him to the Norton Simon Museum. Founded in 1922 as the Pasadena Art Institute, it segued in 1954 to the Pasadena Art Museum. In the 1970s, the museum reached out to wealthy industrialist, philanthropist and art collector, Norton Simon. Simon was looking for a permanent location for his gigantic collection of more than 4,000 ..read more

Oh, Oh, Oh, Au Gratin! Three Cheese Potatoes Au Gratin with Leeks, Fennel and Bacon Side This recipe is upscaled from an ad for Wolf Gourmet that I saw in Fine Cooking many years ago. The first time I made this it was good, but I thought it could be better! It needed more cheese … and more bacon. That reminded me of the absolute BEST grilled cheese sandwich I have ever devoured, the Cheese Toastie from the Kappacasien Stall at the Borough Market in London.Cheese Toasties are made with Gruyère, English cheddar, and Comté cheeses resulting in an oozy, delicious sandwich well worth the calories ..read more

Morning In The Mercado Mercado González – Costa Mesa, CA Visited: December 2023 Tracy and I have had Mexico City on our brains since our incredible April 2023 trip, so when Tracy read about the opening of a huge, new Mexican marketplace in Costa Mesa, we took immediate notice. When she also read that Mercado González included the first U.S. location of Churreria El Moro, where we had devoured the best churros on earth on that México excursion, I knew we’d be heading to Orange County … and soon. Early on a Sunday morning (well, 9 a.m. is early for us on a Sunday), Tracy and I, along with our fr ..read more

A Delicious (Apple) Slice Of Life Caramel Apple Spice Dump Cake Dessert October is my favorite month and autumn is my favorite time of the year. After a long, hot summer it is so nice to have the aroma of soup simmering on the stove and the delicious scent of cookies baking in the oven.             Plus, I love perusing magazines and websites for holiday entertaining ideas and recipes. (Although the Thanksgiving menu is always the same at our house so I don’t know why I even bother to look sometimes…) This recipe for Caramel Apple Dump Cake popped up from So ..read more
