In this short series, I’ll be exploring some ideas that you can implement right now to start raising your level of consciousness. The aim is to keep the information bite-sized, because let’s face it, we’re experiencing information overload in our society, yet we seem disproportionately disconnected, unhappy and unfulfilled. Trouble is, we know all this ‘stuff‘ but knowledge by itself is not enough, We must apply it. Yep, you have to do the work. And then you have to do it some more. Consistency is key. So starting today, I have a challenge for you… Instead of adding something to ..read more

The Weird Origins of Santa
The Gentle Rebel

I thought I’d share some interesting facts about Santa and how it links to yoga. Stick with me, I think it’s worth it! So, the Santa Claus story comes from a few traditions, but a little know part of the Santa story traces back to the Siberian shamans… It is said, these ancient shamans gave magic mushrooms, or ‘holy mushrooms’ (technically named Amanita Muscaria), as gifts in late December. Access to the huts where tribe members lived were blocked with snow, so the mushrooms would be delivered via the chimney – sounding familiar yet? Christmas cards like this were popular in the Victorian era ..read more

What is a Shamanic Yogi?
The Gentle Rebel

SHAMANISM Shamanism dates back, as far as we know, over 100,000 years. Maybe even longer? Shamanism is the first form of spiritual practice. Originating in Siberia, the word Shaman has a few translations. One of them being ‘The one who see’s in the dark’. Meaning the one who see’s things that most people don’t. YOGA There is an on-going debate about how far yoga dates back to. Ranging from 5,000 years, to 10,000 years. Personally, I believe yoga could be even older than this. Cave paintings of stick figures sitting in meditation poses have been discovered dating back to 500BC in India, but mo ..read more

Recipe for Theobroma; Drink of the Gods

Do you drink coffee?  One minute it’s good for you, the next it’s bad. Who should we believe? For me, it’s a matter of listening to your body. I love coffee, but if I drink it every day I get addicted easily. Eventually, too much coffee ends up exhausting my adrenal glands, making it difficult to function in the morning unless I have a strong coffee to get me going. It also does not ground me, and I need sustenance that grounds me as I’m a very flighty person. With this in mind I limit my coffee consumption and have decided to use coffee only on special occasions. This way I appreciate it ..read more

I recommend reading the instructions and then practising somewhere quiet with your eyes closed; INSTRUCTIONS It requires you to use your imagination. Visualise a bright candle. The candle represents your awareness. Now visualise a vast space, within this space reside all thoughts, ideas and emotions; Love, loneliness. Fear, freedom. Hope, despair. Happiness and sadness. This vast space is your mind. Now, using your imagination, take the candle and light up the idea, or emotion that you’d like to bring into awareness. You will realise, you have already been doing this. You have been focussing o ..read more

Spirituality is not ‘love and light’
The Gentle Rebel
by The Gentle Rebel

The term ‘love and light’ is a common phrase coined by the new age movement. But it’s deceptive. The new age movement romanticises many philosophical concepts from eastern religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism.  In doing so it renders the teachings fruitless. The new age may seem shiny but leads to a dead-end. So the romantic notion of ‘love and light’ seems harmless enough, but let’s examine it further. Using the principle of Yin and Yang we can observe how the two opposite sides (the black and white) come together to make the perfect whole. The black represents bad. Th ..read more

The source of all is in everything, it is everything, there is nothing else. To meditate is to become aware. So if we meditate on the source of all. We become aware that there is nobody meditating, there is just one. There is only the limitless one. Our mind sees the sky the sun the earth the waters the fire… These are not the reality. I think, therefore I am.I feel, therefore what?
The Gentle Rebel
by The Gentle Rebel

The philosopher, Descartes theorised that;  Thoughts create who we are. I’d tend to agree and I’d like to add that; ‘Feeling’ is the language of the universe. This can be a difficult concept to grasp. Why? Well, we get taught to Man up. Grow up. Have a stiff upper lip. So we hide our emotions, but these emotions are still there, like the mess you’ve swept under the rug. Waiting to show up when you least expect. So, what to do? Feel more. Connect with your intuition. Show your emotions with love and joy. Then maybe, just maybe, we could have a new philosophy; I feel, therefore I am all tha ..read more
