Happy Wednesday! Our maple syrup season is well on its way and we’ve got several bottles of syrup put up so far. But this past weekend we had quite the setback. I had been boiling down about 18 gallons of sap all day and got down to the final finishing steps. I was in the other room while the sap was boiling in the kitchen when I smelt something off. When I went to the kitchen I found that my stainless steel pot somehow began leaking at the seam! Approximately 30 ounces of sticky nearly-syrup had leaked out all over my gas stovetop. I was bummed to have lost all that time and sap, not to menti ..read more

Happy Wednesday! It’s been a quiet and very chilly week on the farm. I was excited to get our first batch of maple syrup boiling this past weekend, there is nothing quite like fresh maple syrup! We are also preparing for our first goat kids to be born on the farm. Momma goat is due in a couple of weeks so we built a kidding creep and pen. I can’t wait to meet these little guys!

I’m sorry for being late on this week’s hop! We have had quite a rollercoaster week. We got a big snow storm dumping several inches of snow on Tuesday. We also got our maple tree taps put in to gear up for maple syrup season. If you haven’t tapped trees before, it’s a really fun and easy process. You can learn more about tree tapping in my blog article by clicking here. We were also devastated yesterday by the loss of our dog. She had been bravely battling cancer for a few months so we knew our time with her was limited but her loss has left a huge hole in our hearts. She was the best little b ..read more

I feel like I am a little behind this year, I have no idea where January went! I finally got around to planning my garden this week and ordered some seeds. Planning my garden has always been one of my favorite winter activities. Thinking about summer while it’s snowing is always nice. The biggest problem with finishing my garden plan is now I can’t wait to get planting! With my soap-making business, most of my soap oils come in large food-grade 5 gallon buckets. So I have a pretty large bucket collection growing in my barn. I am going to clear out those bucke ..read more

Brrrrrr!! Finally the bitter cold seems to be coming to an end and back to more normal winter temps. We recently had a scare with avian flu in our town. A fellow backyard farmer just down the street from us sadly lost her entire flock of nearly 100 mixed poultry after avian flu was discovered in her flock.
We took that warning seriously and put all of our birds in lockdown for almost two weeks. Sunday we decided it was all clear and planned to let the birds out to free range again. Our chicken run has a human sized door for us to get in and a chicken sized do ..read more
