A Journey to Happiness
Cochlear Implant Life

I am in my early 20's and reside in the most isolated city in the world, Perth, Australia. I was diagnosed with a bilateral, profoundly hearing loss at 14 months old. There was no history of deafness in our family. While other parents focused on helping their kids to walk and talk, my mum and dad had to think about an issue that many parents never even contemplate. They had to decide which culture their daughter should be a part of. Having Cochlear Implants might cut me off from a community that, some would argue is my birthright: 'The Deaf community' where often lack of hearing is an identit ..read more

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs) Scans and Cochlear Implants
Cochlear Implant Life
by Aidan T.

One of the eligibility tests I had before my Cochlear Implant surgery 18 years ago was to have an MRI scan. A scan takes place in a large futuristic-looking tube, an MRI suite, that contains powerful magnets and uses radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. I had to lie inside for 45 minutes (1). It was all rather dull, and upon completion, I thought nothing more of it. MRI scans are of two types, notably:- 1.5 Tesla MRI scans which have a lesser magnetic field with smaller image detail results. 3.0 Tesla MRI scans which have a higher magnetic field with higher definit ..read more

My hearing loss began at five years old. I had a day of hearing robotic sounds and voices in my left ear. The next morning, I woke up with barely any residual hearing in that ear. My first audiologist told me that it was a congenital disorder. Known as an enlarged vestibular aqueduct, she said to me that it was extremely probable the right ear would decline similarly. Life went on. Throughout elementary school (ages 6-11), I noticed small difficulties hearing, but I didn't overly struggle. Around middle school (age 12), the right ear began to decline, and I used a hearing aid to compensate. T ..read more

A story from the Medical News Bulletin about research which helps to deal with the apprehension faced when kids have Cochlear Implants.Editor commentThis is a fascinating read. Language development studies in D/deaf children twenty years ago didn’t have detailed findings related to Cochlear Implant kids. It’s heartening to discover that early cochlear implantation can result in rapid auditory development and exclusive oral communication. There are limitations in the study which are identified in the article. Also, the article suggests that language development in D/deaf children is not possibl ..read more

A story from New Zealand Stuff Magazine about a campaign to increase Cochlear Implant funding: nearly 200 New Zealanders currently meet Ministry of Health criteria for Cochlear Implant surgery. However, waiting lists are overburdened due to inadequate funding.Editor commentAdults in New Zealand sometimes have to wait up to four years for a Cochlear Implant unless they pay 50,000 (New Zealand Dollars) which is the equivalent to 33,000 (USD) to jump the queues. This story struck a chord with us as it's clear that change is needed. The number of people eligible for the funded procedure each year ..read more

Cochlear Implant Cost
Cochlear Implant Life

Cochlear implants are costly because it's highly specialised surgery undertaken. The operation is risky as it takes place inside the skull, electrode placement requires precise skills, new precision techniques mean residual hearing preservation. Alongside this, there is a need to be careful about causing damage or infection.Recently, I have been thinking of getting another Cochlear Implant for my left ear. I am UK (United Kingdom) based, and I would have to pay for a second Implant. I did my research on UK costs, and I was shocked to learn as to how much I would have to pay. Undoubtedly, I'd ..read more

My rescue from isolation
Cochlear Implant Life

I lost almost all of my hearing over 15 years, from age 55 to 70. My hearing loss turned my life around — and not in a good way. Until my loss, I had led a successful, bountiful life. I had been able to achieve what I set out to across domains — educationally, socially, professionally, financially. I counted myself as happy and squared-away, the hard work required, notwithstanding. With the assistance of ever more powerful hearing aids, I dealt with mild, and then moderate, hearing loss with minimal difficulty. But, over time, as the audiograms systematically and unrelentingly trended south ..read more
