Welcome back as we dive into more chat on foreign comics. In this installment, we will be focusing on the different markets and their pricing.   When we think about adding anything to our collection, generally we are likely to head to eBay for availability and different price points. Sure those references sound completely solid. However, when we are looking to sell foreign comics it’s usually American eBay is the venue where the world puts items with a higher price point. Let’s face it, American eBay guarantees exposure to the market with the most disposable income. You may fi ..read more

***This post is not for children or someone with delicate sensibilities.  Graphic violent and disturbing artwork.  You have been warned.*** Before Seduction of the Innocent was published in 1954, some horror books of the late 40’s and early 50’s were shocking.  Even now, some of them are jarring in the graphic violence, callous treatment of fellow humans, or ability to haunt your nightmares.  Some of these comics make you aware of fears that you didn’t know you had.  Since 2020, the majority of these books have risen dramatically in value.  They are rare, notorio ..read more

Comics Price Guide

Zatanna is one of those characters who hasn’t been fully explored in television and movies.  Yes, she had three episodes in Smallville but is that enough?  The Mistress of Magic is an interesting enough character and could easily tie in to a Justice League Dark or Swamp Thing movie.  Let’s get Zatanna on the big screen, JJ Abrams!   Enough begging, on to her first appearances in comic books.  One of the weirdest quirks regarding Zatanna’s first appearances is related to Detective Comics #336.  The story from February 1965 has a gnarly old witch fighting Batm ..read more

Do you remember when Jim Shooter demanded continuity in the Marvel Universe and Wolverine could only be in one place at a time?  That’s the kind of thing that Peter Shiao with Immortal Studios is working toward.  The four books that Immortal Studios is publishing now are all connected but with a different emphasis.    Recently I spoke with Payhuan “Peter” Shiao the founder and CEO of Immortal Studios.  Peter’s father is legendary writer, Shiao Yi who was one of the most prolific Chinese authors ever.  Now that library of original stories is being made into a c ..read more

1st Appearance versus the 2nd Appearance
Comics Price Guide

Recently I wondered if there was a ratio between the value of someone’s first appearance and their second appearance.  Does the comic book market unknowingly keep the ratio fairly consistent or vary wildly? Because there are thousands of characters I decided to limit it to characters created from 1980 to 1983.  All are significant characters and worth collecting however some are more popular now.   They are listed in ratio order, meaning that the best deals for 2nd appearances are at the top.  All values are from November 2023 and will change over time. From the earliest days of Prince Adam turning into the behemoth known as He-man, the Masters of the Universe was a hit.  Mattel was a boss-level marketer to kids by releasing action figures, castles, comics, cartoons, magazines, and books.  So it’s no surprise that DC partnered with Mattel in the early 80s.  The first appearance of the Masters of the Universe in DC Comics Presents 47 is straightforward.  They introduce He-Man and Skeletor by having them battle with DC’s greatest superhero, Superman.  The Masters of the Universe’s second appearance has some weirdness t ..read more

When Ghost Rider 15, with its glow-in-the-dark cover, hit the shelves in the summer of 1991 collectors clamored to buy it.  With a flaming close-up of Ghost Rider expertly drawn by Mark Texeria, it would have sold without the glowing cover.  Add some light adsorbing phosphors to the cover and it had to go to another printing.  That epic issue was the first glow-in-the-dark comic book, launching a new type of variant cover.  It would be a few months before another publisher gave collectors another glow-in-the-dark cover.  In October 1991, Continuity Comics published Cy ..read more

Uncanny X-men 260 What are the top 10 Dazzler Covers of all time? From her first appearance in X-Men 130, Dazzler was flamboyant, dramatic, and the center of attention.  That makes sense when you can turn sound into light as a mutant power.  Since Alison (one “L” not two) Blaire is a natural performer with a voice and stage performance deserving of a superstar, it’s little wonder why the Taylor Swift rumors continue.  Let’s look at her top 10 comic book covers and try not to be a stalker like the creepy guy on Uncanny X-Men 260. Where’s the Batmobile?
Comics Price Guide

How many vehicles are more recognizable than the Batmobile?  None.  If you said the van from Scooby-Doo, you can have a Scooby snack.  But the Batmobile is loved and recognized around the world.  It doesn’t even matter if you’re talking about the 1966 Ford Futura Batmobile, the city-block-long Tim Burton Batmobile, or the Christian Bale Tumbler Batmobile.  So why does the Batmobile appear so rarely on the cover of Batman and Detective Comics? Batman received his own title in Spring 1940 but it wasn’t until issue 20 that the Batmobile made a cover appearance.  You ..read more
