I am worried for humanity.  Social distancing is an important precaution during this acute phase of Covid-19 to keep our elderly and immunocomprised healthy, though I worry what the future will bring.  As homo sapiens we are social creatures; touch is an important part of our general well being.  Physical contact with our fellow humans keeps us both physically and mentally healthy.  Before this outbreak I was already noticing a downturn of touch.  The more engrossed in social media platforms we become the less we are physically interacting with those around us.  Living in a litigation society ..read more

Gratefully Celiac – A Mindfulness Exercise

The mindfulness theme for this month is gratitude. I find it very easy to be grateful for the positives in life such as family, friends, pets, home etc. … BUT… Is it possible to be grateful for something that has been considered a negative aspect of life?  Every day we are presented with opportunities to see things in multiple ways from many points of view.  Too often we blast through, making snap judgements then base the rest of our opinions on these or on stories told to us.  I know I’m guilty of this!  So I challenged myself to take the biggest negative in my life and look at it from a diff ..read more

A Mindful Practice of Active Listening

Noise is both comfort and terror.  I am a quite person by nature, preferring to hear the world around me rather than interact with it.  When I am placed in positions of discussion often my mind is a jumbled mess of “what should I say?” with my stomach in knots and heart pounding out of my chest.  When I finally get words out I spend the next 10 minutes thinking “that was dumb!” “I should have said …. Instead” or “next time keep that mouth shut”!  Am I ever comfortable?  Sure but it is usually when I am talking at people rather than with; as is the case in teaching.  So how do I translate t ..read more

Clear the Clutter

How mindfulness can help you organize the day. It’s that time of year again; when the “I can do everything” feeling of January resolutions give way to a February funk. The midwinter freeze has us stuck inside, curled up, basically in hiding. I’m right here with you! Stuck in the clutter of post Christmas, New Year stuff. Not sure how to put into action the changes I want to see this year. How to integrate progress into an already busy schedule. Sure I said I was going to finally lose that last 10 pounds but where exactly do I find the time to add in an extra workout? Or create that month long ..read more

Yoga for Digestion: Part 1 Dynamic Twists

While planning out some yoga postures related to digestive health for the Canadian Celiac Magazine I realized it’s not a one type of posture/yoga situation.  Limited on space I struggled with which aspects of yoga to focus on.   My original copy was a novel which was slowly whittled down to 5 simple postures.  When discussing yoga and digestion a few topics come into play: restorative postures that help ease digestive pain breath-work to stimulate and massage steady poses to help slow things down dynamic movements to speed things up twists to unstick and eliminate toxins Each one of these topi ..read more

Gray | An Exercise in Mindfulness

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear this word?  Repeat it.  Gray.  Does it induce feelings?  Do you see the colour?  Does it cloud your judgement?  While black is the absence of colour and white is the combination of all colours, how does gray fit in?  Where on the spectrum is it? Are you?  Are you all colour or none at all? Gray is often perceived as a negative.  Why?  Why does this in-between state need to be bad?  Can we switch up our point of view to see it as good?  Or maybe even just there.  A necessity that allows us to move through.  To move beyond the need to judg ..read more

The Way You Breathe Affects Your Health

If breath is life and life is breath, then why do we take it for granted? When sick or hurt, when happy or sad the breath seems to be the last thing on our minds, when in reality it should be the first.  Breathing is an automatic thing the body does in order to live.  The problem is that life often gets in the way of living. Both good and bad experiences shape the way we take in and send out air; with the negative things having a much greater impact on the way we breathe long term.  This amazing vessel we call the body is designed in such a way that air is pulled in and pushed out without cons ..read more

Space | A Mindfulness Challenge

This month I challenge you to see space instead of obstacles. Space allows for possibilities.  Do you see the forest, or the trees?  A forest appears like a giant wall, standing tall and solid against a brilliant sky; insurmountable.   The forest is full of dark, scary places where any evil may be lurking.  Is it better to just avoid? But!  The forest contains trees; each unique in their own beauty.  Showing signs of stress and success.  They are smaller objects in your path that can be moved around; sometimes with ease and sometimes with great effort (think fallen trees that must be climbed o ..read more
