A New Year’s Day Walk In Queens Park I took our three dogs for an early morning walk through Queens Park on New Years Day, and as it had rained overnight, everything was looking beautifully fresh and green. So later in the day I headed out with camera in hand to capture the essence of our beautiful park. Fresh and green  (DxO Photolab 4/Color Efex Pro) A study in black and white – trees alongside the Queens Park Golf Course (DxO Photolab 4/Nik Silver Efex Pro)   The Henry Edging Rose Garden (DxO Photolab 4/Nik Color Efex Pro)   A grunge corner in Queens Park (DxO Photolab ..read more

Stuck In A Photographic Rut

Rut = “a habit or pattern of behaviour that has become dull and unproductive but is hard to change“ Back in 2016 I wrote a post about being in a bit of a photographic rut. I was suffering from photographer’s block. And it seems here I am again in the same, or at least similar, photographic rut. I feel that right now my photoblog is driving my photography rather than me proactively becoming more creative and allowing my photography to drive my photoblog. The good news is that there are heaps of ideas on line to help get out of a photographic rut. Just going for a walk with camera in hand and st ..read more

A Step Back In Time

Are you sitting comfortably because this is a long story. Actually it’s a story in two parts – one short, the other a bit longer. I have become aware of a new “newspeak” term that TVNZ presenters have been using in news bulletins lately. It is “back story”. Although I’m intelligent enough to work out what it means, I Googled its meaning to see when the term came into common usage. Turns out it’s been around for many, many years having first been used in the 1980s. Although being “invented” for fictional not factual use, I like this definition that I found in the online Cambridge dictionary –&n ..read more

Tomorrow May Rain So I’ll Follow The Sun

Follow the sun A couple of weeks ago, when the weather forecast for Invercargill was lousy, we decided to pack up the motorhome and follow the sun for a few days. Perhaps saying follow the sun isn’t exactly correct as very few places south of Dunedin were expecting sunny spring weather, but at least we could head for somewhere less cold and damp than home. We headed out of Invercargill along the Southern Scenic Route towards Fortrose, with out sights set on Hinahina Reserve near Owaka. Turning off at Fortrose we followed the lesser-travelled inland route to Curio Bay, then up to Waikawa and Ni ..read more

West Coast Road Trip – part 2

West Coast Road Trip Part 2 In my last road trip post  the story basically ended at the Gentle Annie Camping Ground near Mohikinui as we headed back to Greymouth. We actually travelled a several more hundred kilometres after leaving Greymouth  by way of heading north to Nelson, then east cross to Blenheim to follow State Highway 1 all the way back home to Invercargill. This post is not really a “part 2” but more of an excuse to share with you a few more photographs I took along the way.   The Cowhsed at Gentle Annie Camping Ground The Cowshed is the hub of the Gentle Annie Campi ..read more

A West Coast Road Trip
The Occasional Photoblogger

Since leaving Invercargill just over a week ago we’ve clocked up 1,001 kilometres on our West Coast road trip. I could have said 1,000 kilometres but the extra one-k seems to make it a bit special. This morning, Sunday, we have woken to another greyish West Coast day. We are parked up at Gentle Annie Camp located at the mouth of the Mohikinui River, having yesterday morning travelled down from Kohaihai, the northernmost point of the West Coast road network. But let’s go back to the start  of our West Coast road trip. The first leg was Invercargill to Wanaka via the Crown Range. What a gre ..read more

Don’t leave Town Till You’ve Seen The Country

Don’t leave town till you’ve seen the country If you are roughly the same vintage as me, you’ll probably remember that 1980s tourism campaign “Don’t Leave Home Till You’ve Seen The Country” Well, with Covid-19 landing, and staying, on our doorstep preventing overseas travel, it is timely to revisit our own beautiful country and all it has to offer. Such a pity the current Level 2 lockdown in Auckland is stopping many Kiwis from getting out and about. As you may have read in an earlier story on The Occasional Photoblogger, Lyn and I took delivery of our “new” motorhome about a month ago, having ..read more

Another Bucket List Item Ticked Off

What’s On Your Bucket List? I’m sure I’d be correct in saying that to have a motorhome and live a life on the road enjoying our beautiful country would be a bucket list item for many New Zealanders. It has certainly been on our bucket list for several years now, and has at last come to fruition. We had paid a deposit on a motorhome just before we went into Covid-19 lockdown in March and have been waiting patiently since then for the company we purchased it from to be able to get back to work and have it fully refurbished for us. Well the waiting ended a couple of weeks ago when we took deliver ..read more

Should I Shoot RAW or JPEG
The Occasional Photoblogger
by Rick - The Occasional Photoblogger

Having pancakes for breakfast every Sunday morning is a long standing tradition in our  home. I’m not sure when it actually started, but it’s what we have done almost every Sunday morning – rain, hail or shine – for the past decade or so . So what have pancakes on a Sunday morning go to do with photography – let alone the shoot RAW or JPEG discussion? Be warned – this could be the most ridiculous story that you”ll ever read about shooting RAW or JPEG! Before I explain and present my very tongue in cheek approach about whether to shoot RAW or JPEG, I need to acknowledge a story I read ..read more
