For the first time in a while, the FreePBX Engineering team has published a new Open Source module, the Missed Call Notification module. This module satisfies the request that comes up periodically in the FreePBX Community Forum to have the PBX generate a notification whenever a call to an extension goes unanswered. With this module, either the PBX admin or the user can configure email notifications for whenever they miss a call. This past week saw two noteworthy threads posted to the FreePBX community forum separated by a few days; independent reports of a “Tampered File Warning” showing up in the FreePBX dashboard. This warning is connected to a core security feature of FreePBX. In FreePBX (and PBXact) each module is published with a signature, and in the event that any FreePBX file is altered from its published state, a security warning is generated on the dashboard; and, if enabled, also by email. The GA release for FreePBX 16 was about a year ago now, and since that time both versions 15 and 16 have continued to get new features and updates.  The majority of our current development efforts now are laser focused on the next version of FreePBX, which will be built on a new FreePBX Distro based on Rocky Linux. On July 15, 2022, Palo Alto Networks published a blog “Digium Phones Under Attack: Insight Into the Web Shell Implant” warning of high volume of malicious IP traffic targeting “Sangoma PBX” phone systems. The blog post references the exploit CVE-2021-45461 that was originally reported on Dec 2021 over 6 months ago.
