Gunnison Loop
The Screaming Pebbles

It’s been a while since I was in the saddle and even longer since I posted anything here. Such a beautiful day just couldn’t go to waste, so I pointed the bike south and decided to ride down to Gunnison and back via the west side of Utah Lake. I always enjoy riding down Hwy 89, but hadn’t been on this part of the road for a long time. Traffic wasn’t too bad through Utah County (which is a little unusual for a Saturday morning) and the traffic up Hwy 6 out of Spanish Fork was smooth sailing to Thistle. The temperature was in the 60s for most of the morning, breaking into the 70s for the aftern ..read more

MotoVlogs I Follow
The Screaming Pebbles

I tend to waste my fair share of time watching YouTube videos, particularly over the last 12 months as I’ve felt a little more cooped up than usual due to the pandemic. I thought I’d take a minute and share some of the videos I tend to watch and let you know what I like about them (in no particular order). 2 Lane Life I really like these guys. They look at the riding the same way Kelly and I have for years. They ride big mile days to interesting places and ride all year long. They’ve only been doing this for about a year, but they got it going on. They talk about where they’re riding, do some ..read more

Immigration Canyon—Just 15 Minutes Out of the City
The Screaming Pebbles
by Ty Kiisel

One of the things I like about where I live is the fact that 15 minutes from my house there are two or three ways to be out of the city and into a mountain pass or winding up a beautiful canyon road. There aren’t many places that can say that, but I really enjoy being nestled up against the Wasatch Mountains. A couple night ago, after sitting behind the computer working all day, I took a short break before dinner to feel the wind and watch the road pass under my feet. In a little less than 15 minutes, I was on top of Little Mountain getting ready to drop down into Immigration Canyon and then ..read more

What is a Real Biker?
The Screaming Pebbles

Like a lot of guys, I learned to ride on dirt bikes and my friends mini-bikes as a kid (behind my mother’s back, of course). She was very opposed to my riding a motorcycle. She even convinced my Dad, who I found out after he’d passed away, to toe the “motorcycles-are-bad” line. As a result, I was an adult before I started riding. It shouldn’t, but it gives me some kind of sick satisfaction knowing that the tens of thousands of miles I put on my bike every year drive her crazy. I know my racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats drives her totally bonkers. I just wish I had known my Dad was into mot ..read more

Utah's West Desert and Lunch in Eureka
The Screaming Pebbles

With the temperatures hovering between 58 and 60 degrees, we couldn’t pass up the bluebird day and decided to put a few miles on the bikes. Sometimes you just gotta make hay while the sun shines. There had been some snow in the mountains, so we decided to head out to the west desert and enjoy part of the old Pony Express route. We climbed on I-15 to Bangerter Highway heading south and west to the Camp Williams Highway. We hung right at the crossroads toward Eagle Mountain and Cedar Fort on Highway 73. Fortunately, the tempe ..read more

Early September on the Mirror Lake Highway
The Screaming Pebbles

This is my last week working remotely for a company out of New York and one of the last opportunities I’ll have to saddle up at 3:00 in the afternoon on a weekday and put a couple hundred miles in before dinner time. Although the Mirror Lake Highway is one of my favorite rides near the Salt Lake Valley, it’s been a while since I took the journey over Bald Mountain Pass. Like many great rides out of Salt Lake, it’s starts on I-80 climbing over Parley’s Canyon. Fortunately it doesn’t take long before you are off the Interstat ..read more

The Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000: Salt Lake To Denver and Back
The Screaming Pebbles
by Ty Kiisel

I had been thinking about doing an Iron Butt for a few years, it just sounded like something that would be challenging and fun to do. This year I convinced Kelly to join in the insanity and earlier this summer set out to ride from where we live in Salt Lake City to Denver and back—roughly 1,100 miles. Unfortunately, about 100 or so miles in, in the wee hours of the morning, a cam bearing failed and my cam box basically detonated requiring me to tow my bike home. This was a couple of weeks before our scheduled trip to Deadwo ..read more

Togwatee Pass, Jackson, Wy and Home

The way home from Thermopolis was all familiar ground for me. We’ve been on this stretch of Wyoming highway a few times and the Togwatee pass out of Dubois is another fun mountain pass that drops you off at the entrance to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National parks. After a quick continental breakfast in the hotel, we left Thermopolis heading to Alpine where we would spend the night at the Nordic Inn. As lunch time approached, we decided to stop at our favorite little place in Dubois for an early lunch at the Cowboy Cafe be ..read more

Devil's Tower and the Cloud Peak Skyway
The Screaming Pebbles

I think my first encounter with Devil’s Tower was as a teenager watching Richard Dreyfuss sculpt the monument out of mashed potatoes in Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Since that time, visiting the so far unexplained rock formation protruding from the surrounding grassland and forest has been on my list of places I wanted to visit. I don’t know, maybe it is an ancient alien landing pad. I did notice a selection of stuffed aliens and other Close Encounter items on the shelf at the trading post. We were still ..read more

Sturgis, South Dakota
The Screaming Pebbles

Even though the rally was over, we decided to make the pilgrimage to Sturgis. None of us had been there, but felt like even though the rally was over, it was worth making the trip to see the town and maybe even buy a t-shirt or something. Another beautiful ride from Deadwood to Sturgis and we found ourselves on Main Street wondering how over a million people fit into this otherwise quiet little town during the Sturgis Rally. After a quick stop at the the Harley store, where I bought a hat and Kelly bought a shirt or two, we ..read more
