Grab your paint and join me for a free paint-along on my YouTube channel. This week I’m looking at abstract landscapes, so let your imagination go wild! No need to register just go to the link above.
Here are some artists who painted abstract landscapes:
Helen Lundeberg (swooooon) one of my all-time favorites. Delicious sweeping layers of transparent colors that hint at mountains, seas, and beaches.
Stuart Davis - jazz lover, abstraction master, amazing artist. What’s not to love!
Helen Frankenthaler those veils of color, runny paint and HUGE canvases. Fall in love with her paintings all over ..read more

I get asked this question often. So here’s my advice to beginners just starting in acrylic painting. What to get, what not to get, and how to start.
First and foremost, get many surfaces to paint on. Paper, canvas panels, and sketchbooks have a lot of surfaces ready to paint on. Check out my Amazon store for some supplies.
Then get some pretty good paint. You can start with student-grade cheaper paint, but honestly, you’re doing yourself a disservice. If you start with good paint, it’s easier to make the painting look good. And in the long run, you’re not saving that much mon ..read more

It’s summertime and the open road is calling. Are you planning a weekend at the lake? Maybe an urban outing to NYC? No matter where you go you can take your art supplies and create on the road.
Here are a few ideas and tips to get you started.
First, if you plan to fly with your art supplies here are a couple of things you should do.
TAG IT: It’s far easier to travel with acrylics and watercolors than it is to travel with oil paints. Simply put a note like this one in a plastic bag and put it inside the suitcase that has your art supplies in ..read more

Fair warning…. this technique is addicting! I love, love, love making monoprints with the Gelliplate and Golden OPEN.
Here’s what you need for this technique: Check out the entire list at my Amazon Store here.
Gelliplate - get the original Gelliplate, it’s the best.
Brayers - same here. Get the real deal. Speedball soft brayers are workhorses and last a long time.
Golden OPEN - the only paint I use for Gelliplate printing. Works miracles!
BFK paper - yep, I could use cheaper paper, but why? This paper is so good I wrote a love letter to it.

Using photo references can be a great way to improve your painting skills. Here are some steps to help you effectively use a photo reference while painting:
Choose a Suitable Reference. Select a high-quality photo that has good lighting, clear details, and composition that you find appealing. Remember that your source material is probably copyrighted. Make sure you are only using it as reference, not to make a line-for-line copy.
Study the Photo: Take some time and analyze the photo. Look at the composition, lighting, colors, and details. Pay attention to patterns, shapes, and valu ..read more
