Double Acting Air Powered Fluid (Hydrotest) Pump

Here is a quick shot of the set up of a double acting air powered fluid pump. This is the same sort of pump you would see in a hydrotest cabinet or even in hydraulic bolt tensioner pump. Some very common pumps, which we utilize extensively are the fluid pumps from SC Hydraulic. The reservoir is added on this model since the fluid being used for this pump is hydraulic oil and it will act as the supply for the two double acting cylinders. The slightly blue-ish square in the center of the picture is the back of the selector valve. This is the valve were you can select advance or retract (supply a ..read more

Difficult bolting applications require imaginative solutions:

When a nut and bolt is in a difficult location to access, it can be really hard to work on. When that nut is over 5” and the tools are equally beefy, it can make the work that much more difficult. Adding to complications are the safety (HSE) weight restrictions regarding what weights can be manually lifted. Normally, you might be able to use a lifting point and an overhead winch or tool balancer of some type as a solution. At Winshaw, we happened to have a customer with just those same issues to consider, except there was also an overhang! Meaning that an overhead lifting apparatus could not b ..read more

The bottom line advantage of Subsea Tensioners

Subsea tensioners are different in design than standard, topside tensioners. That may seem like an obvious statement. However, real differences have been engineered into the subsea tensioners with the operational environment in mind. Meaning, subsea tensioners are designed for working at depth on the seabed – this situation is very different than working topside. If you look at a subsea tensioner like the STU4-187 which is for 1-⅞” bolt you will find it has a little less capacity than a topside tensioner for the same size bolt. The topside tensioner you would use for the same size bolt would b ..read more

How do lock ring cylinders work?

Lock ring cylinders are great for when you want to reduce the risk of unexpected piston retractions. Imagine if you are lifting and holding a heavy structure with a set of standard cylinders and one of the seals in one of the cylinders fails. If they are standard cylinders, with no lock ring, then oil will escape from the cylinder and the piston will retract due to the weight of the structure on the piston. However, with a lock ring cylinder, the piston is threaded and has a collar which can be made up tight against the top of the cylinder body. This means that even if the cylinder was to st ..read more

Hydraulic Manifolds: How to choose a design and where to buy them

Obviously, there are lots of different types of hydraulic manifolds and the definition may change a bit depending on who you are talking with at the time. So for these reasons, I am going to discuss 10,000 PSI hydraulic manifolds, with ⅜” NPT ports. These are the types of manifolds you would use with common, name brand, commercially available hydraulic pumps and systems. However, in all cases the word “manifold” is usually used when someone wants to describe the item which is used to help direct flow in the system. A very simple example of this would be what you may hear referred to as a “spli ..read more

How to work on stubborn cylinders:

The first step in working on a cylinder (or hydraulic ram) is usually removing the gland. There are sometimes reverse glands on cylinders for service trucks, but for this article we are looking at gland nuts which are found on the rod side. Hopefully, you have a gland nut which comes out easily, but if it is stuck and won’t come out then you have to get a bit more aggressive. Put an extension handle or a large adjustable wrench or spanner wrench on the handle of the stop ring tool to give more leverage. Place 2 suitably sized blank punches in the holes and place a flat bar central to the cyl ..read more
