Fishing the Beaverkill – A quick trip out to the Catskills

This past weekend I took a few extra days off work to go fish the Catskills. It’s open season as of April 1, and I had heard a lot of encouraging stories about how good the fishing can be in the spring. I visited for the first time over the summer, and was in awe of the natural beauty of this part of New York. All the streams remind me of western streams and have a wide and wild look to them. As a trout angler, I’m especially fond of the dedication to trout that’s evident in the “Trout Town” of Roscoe. I’ve read a lot of fishing literature about Theodore Gordon’s early pioneering of American f ..read more

My Small Stream Setup | A Reyr Gear Rod Review
Trout and Fly | An East Coast Fly Fishing Blog

My favorite type of water to fish is a small stream. I love the solitude and peace you can find on a quiet brook away from the crowds, and I’m always interested to see what wildlife might cross my path. And of course, you never know what fish might be lurking in an unsuspecting stream. In recent months, I’ve spent more of my time at these streams; fine tuning my hike/fish set up. One of my buddies has a very small packable tenkara rod that he takes with him on hikes. I’ve personally never been able to get into tenkara (despite owning a rod), because I always find myself wanting a reel and exce ..read more

Fall Fishing at the Swift River
Trout and Fly | An East Coast Fly Fishing Blog

For the last few days, I’ve been visiting family in Massachusetts after a long time quarantining.  On Saturday our plans were open, so I paid a visit to a stream where I’ve spent a lot of time fishing, the Swift River in Belchertown, Massachusetts.  It’s hard to believe, but it’s been at least a year (maybe two?) since I’ve fished there.  It’s interesting to see how the river has changed.  Trees have fallen, creating new habitat and flows. The riverbed has built up silt in different areas, causing deep troughs and new holes for the fish to hide in. I almost took a swim a co ..read more

Late Summer Trip to the Catskills
Trout and Fly | An East Coast Fly Fishing Blog

A few weeks ago, my wife and I took a late summer trip to the Catskills. I’ve been wanting to go visit there for years, and finally set aside time for a trip. We stayed in a cabin near the Roscoe area, which is known as “Trout Town, USA”. I know there are probably a lot of towns that claim to be fishing towns, but very few get to claim the title of being the birthplace of American fly fishing. We arrived in Mid-August, and anyone I talked to said the water was very low in many places and recommended that we try the two tailwater streams in the area, the east and west branches of the Delaware R ..read more

Fly Fishing the Farmington River in April
Trout and Fly | An East Coast Fly Fishing Blog

It’s Saturday again, and here I am standing at the edge of the Farmington River.  It’s April 25th and another beautiful day out.  This April has been unique in a lot of ways.  We talk about COVID-19 much in the same way we used to talk about the weather.  And speaking of the weather, we’ve had some strange days as well.  One weekend I awoke to snow, only to see it evaporated in time for lunch. When I arrived at the river, I was pleased to see that not too many people were out in my selected location.  I put on my waders, grabbed my rod, and looked both ways for an ..read more

Farmington River Fishing Report

What a weird world we’re living in.  No one could have imagined the changes that would be taking place in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic.  I consider myself one of the lucky ones.  I have the option to travel safely to a quiet stream and listen to the carefree sound of birds and moving water.  When I look at the fish, waterfowl, and all the other wildlife I see, the world hasn’t changed for them.  Life goes on. Although not the best place to find solitude, I decided to fish the Farmington River in Barkhamsted, Connecticut.  I actually made my first trip to this r ..read more

Fly Fishing the Raritan River: The Ken Lockwood Gorge Area

It’s been a while since my last post, and I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been fishing as much as I’d like. My wife and I recently moved to New York, and settling into everyday life has left me with less free time. I’m hoping to change that as we move into the Spring, and wanted to kick things off with a report on my first trip; fishing the Raritan River in New Jersey. As I’ve learned, New Jersey is a wonderful place to go trout fishing. Only about an hour from New York City, one can find several streams well-suited for both stocked and wild trout. There are several wild brook and brown trout ..read more

Lost a Fly Box at the Gunpowder? I found one
Trout and Fly | An East Coast Fly Fishing Blog

I fished the Gunpowder River this week and found a fly box along a trail. I didn’t see any other anglers on the path or in the water, so I assume they must have left the river. If you happened to lose your fly box or know the person who did, email me at: hello@troutandfly.com. Please include the appearance/brand of the fly box so that I can verify and get it back to you! The fishing this week was fairly good at the Gunpowder until there was a dam release which clouded up the water. I’ve never fished it during a dam release, and it’s not something I’d like to do again. You wouldn’t believe the ..read more

Morgan Run Fishing Update
Trout and Fly | An East Coast Fly Fishing Blog
by TroutandFly

This week I took another trip to Morgan Run.  The fishing was good and the trout seem to be spread out evenly in the Klee Mill area. The flows were at a good level and the water remained clear despite the rain we’ve had lately.  I caught a number of trout above and down below the bridge, and nymphing was the name of the game! I used a dark stonefly pattern in size 16 with a rainbow warrior inspired dropper in a size 20 most of the time.  Most fish seemed to prefer the stonefly pattern. As far as bugs in the air, I saw what looked like a giant stonefly and one sulphur.  The ..read more
