Rebel Girl singalong.

I like to sing and play the banjo although I’m not particularly talented. But you know what? Who the fuck cares! I believe that music should be a participatory and shared celebration of life. I love Pete Seeger’s idea that everyone should raise their voices and sing. These old union songs are music for the people and they should be sung BY the people! There are living testaments of the struggles and joys of the life. So here is my version (no banjo) of Rebel Girl, with mistakes (cause the language is a bit dated and I started to laugh!!). Joe Hill wrote it for his dear activist friend Eliz ..read more

Episode 17: Permaculture Pandemic 3 – Mutual Aid for Collective Futures
Permaculture for the People

In the third instalment of the Permaculture Pandemic Podcast series I discuss the concept and practice of mutual aid, including it’s history (my version), how it relates to permaculture and why people are finding it so helpful and, dare I say, hopeful in this crisis. Let’s use mutual aid, solidarity, and cooperativism to build collective futures in spite of capitalism and crisis! Also, I got the name of woman activist who Joe Hill wrote Rebel Girl for wrong! It was Elizabeth Gurley Flynn! Here are two versions of that amazing song. This lovely version by Alyeah Hansen and Hazel Dickens ..read more

Welcome to the 2nd of the Permaculture Pandemic Podcast episodes! In this episode I give you some important reasons why you should grow food this year in the midst of the crisis caused by the pandemic (and the recession and the mess of colonial-capitalism). I share some action tips about how to get your garden started. Cultivate abundance in the face of uncertainty! Please note: The pandemic podcast episodes will be more raw and less edited than my usual podcast episodes. In order to make an episode daily (or close to daily) I will basically record, add my intro and exit and publish. I a ..read more

Hi Friends and Comrades, I hope this finds you well. I plan to do regular, short pandemic podcast episodes to discuss how permaculture principles and practices may help us through this crisis and to put forward social justice-based actions we can take during and after this pandemic. Planning your garden in the face of climate breakdown
Permaculture for the People

January is a hard time for many of us in the Northern Hemisphere. It is cold, often gray, and, depending on where you live, snowy or stormy. But it is an essential time to start planning gardens, as well as other Earth-based activities, for the spring and summer. In the face of climate breakdown, the task of cheerfully planning one’s garden may be filled with sadness, anxiety, or confusion. The snowy picture of my backyard looks lovely and wintry but until yesterday, it was freakishly mild. I know other parts of the world are experiencing much more serious climate chaos. However, the creation ..read more

Small-scale farmers – not lab foods – can help save the planet
Permaculture for the People
by Permaculture for the People/Rebecca Ellis

George Monbiot’s recent article in which he celebrates the rise of lab-based foods and the end of the agrarian age is highly problematic. It ignores social scientific and scientific research about agricultural systems and minimizes the practices and struggles of small-scale, organic farmers. His position also represents a confusing departure from his recent critiques of the capitalist system. The global agriculture system is currently dominated by an industrial-capitalist model that is incredibly damaging to non-human nature, brutal to both wild and domesticated animals, exploitative of worker ..read more

Radical change & radical patience: lessons from my garden
Permaculture for the People

Last year, right about this time, I was determined that my family and I were going to move. I desperately wanted to get out of the suburbs of my city and live more centrally. The main reason for this is that I wanted to drive much less and so wanted to live in a more walkable, bikeable neighbourhood. I also wanted to be in a neighbourhood with more ecological and social justice-minded activities. Additionally, I hoped to find a place with more space to garden. I know this seems counter-intuitive for many cities but in my mid-sized city it is not impossible to find centrally-located residential ..read more

Other worlds are possible but only through struggle
Permaculture for the People
by Permaculture for the People/Rebecca Ellis
4y ago
The 2020s are going to be about struggle but if we do it right, it will be collective and (mostly) joyful Everyone who follows science and environmental news knows that predictions for the next few decades are grim and scary. Climate change, by most accounts is happening quicker and more unpredictably than scientists had anticipated. People are already suffering around the world as climate disasters and oppression increase. Humans are being presented with two dominant pathways: one egalitarian and co-operative and the other authoritarian and destructive. So far, if elections are an indicati ..read more
