Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau, As we head toward the end of the year this is a busy time for many with a lot of energy inputs being invested in the aim of future returns. Merve has focused on the principle of designing from patterns to details, and all around us we can sense the change in the season and when we look more closely we can see those changes displayed at an individual level. Gardeners are busy planting seedlings, sowing seeds, feeding fruit trees and trying to stay ahead of the weeds as the warming weather produces a rush of growth. But at the same time you mig ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau I am currently in my final week of a trip back to Queensland Australia where my permaculture journey started more than 2 decades ago, and I have been fortunate to revisit some sites that I helped to create and see the changes that have occurred since I returned to Aotearoa in 2017. With the wonderful warm 27 – 33 degree days I have been reminded of the summer ahead and that I have a lot of preparation to get done in the garden and on the farm as soon as I return home. There will also be a lot of activity in the permaculture space over the next month with s ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau, As we officially enter Spring the change in the weather here in the Rangitikei has been noticeable and the anticipation of the warmer months is building. I have been spending longer and longer outdoors planting hundreds of trees to form new windbreaks/wildlife corridors/shade/animal fodder, and in the garden observing fruit trees burst into blossom, listening to the bees buzzing and feeding snails to my ducks as they stalk me when I weed nearby. Merve has shared some wonderful insights gained while overseas visiting family, and delves into another princi ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau Firstly I would like to apologise for the delay in the August newsletter. The wonderful Merve is overseas visiting family, and in preparation she had prepared this months news for me to distribute.  However, due to some significant technology issues resulting from laptop and floor collision, my digital life got somewhat waylaid as I chose the option of repair over the purchase of another possession.  This has reminded me however, that with aspects of our lives often reliant on continued access to technology, I need to accept this outcom ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau, We are now half way through the calendar year and heralding in the Māori New Year. As Merve shares below, this is a time for both looking back, and looking to the future. So as Chair I have been reflecting on the work council has undertaken and where we are headed. There has been lots of action behind the scenes, and as projects get closer to fruition we will share more details. But one of the first steps we took was to extend all current memberships as at June 30 2023, through to June 30 2024, resulting in a significant extension for most of our paid m ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau, Back in the March newsletter we shared the direction of the council and our intentions to address some foundational issues that underpin our organisation. Communication is a priority and we kicked things off by moving from a quarterly to a monthly newsletter. This month we have taken the next step and moved to a new mailing system, Mailerlite. We know that initially this may result in the newsletter heading to your spam folder, so we will be sharing on Facebook whenever a newsletter has been sent for the next 2 months so you can take steps to make sure ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau. With the range of projects we are looking to undertake as part of our ‘Whakaoho’ /Reawakening (which you can read more about in our March Newsletter or on Facebook) the council have co-opted on two additional council members since the AGM.  Nick Ratcliffe and Belinda Bidois bring some fantastic skills and energy to the PiNZ Council and will help us ensure that we achieve the goals we have set ourselves. With the formation of the new council we have each taken on different areas to oversee putting our diverse skills to use ..read more

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whanau. As the weather cools we see summer harvests coming to an end, and the darkness creeping in earlier and earlier.  The recent cool weather has already seen people in my local area of the Rangitikei lighting their fires and spending more time indoors.  Meanwhile I am planning my cool season planting and kicking things off by planting my garlic over the first week of April.  At the same I am juggling making the most of the current abundance and storing it for the year to come, and heading into a season of cheesemaki ..read more
