Tossing Together a Few Thoughts About Salad

How about a salad for lunch or dinner?   Well, for many of us, the word salad denotes a bowl of cut greens, sliced tomato, purple Bermuda onion, a slice or two of cucumber, and a couple of croutons. For too many of us this represents the only form of raw vegetables that we get in our diets.   I love food and I wouldn’t consider myself extremely health conscious.  My love for food has led me to study nutrition at one time which has aided me in my approach to sound nutritional cooking. However, I have always enjoyed a tasty salad.   Common sense tells us that a salad is safe ..read more

No matter how much work you have piled up on your desk, skipping your lunch break isn’t advisable. According to a recent article, growing numbers of American workers aren’t leaving their desks during their lunch break due to excessive amounts of pressure. While it’s important to dedicate yourself to your work, failing to take a break can actually lead to burnout and stress. On the other hand, the “Take Back the Lunch Break” survey found that “workers value their lunch breaks and feel more engaged and productive when they make the time to take a lunch break every day.” With that in mind, here a ..read more

A wise fashion editor once proclaimed that looking good at any weight is more a matter of style than fashion. So, while fashion trends may come and go with the seasons, a personal style that works for you will keep you looking good – even when you’re carrying extra weight.   Paula Reed knows what she’s talking about. While serving as style director at Grazia, the United Kingdom’s highly influential glossy fashion weekly, she authored Style Clinic (HarperCollins), a book chock-full of flashy photographs of well-dressed celebrities and jam-packed with easy-to-digest nuggets of advice on how to l ..read more

Bowled Over by the Cabbage Soup Diet

We all know someone who has tried the infamous Cabbage Soup Diet. I admit that for one misguided week back in the 1990s, I was a cabbage soup slurper. Before tiring of the soup’s taste and the pungent aroma that wafted from my opened fridge where the soup cauldron lurked I did manage to lose a few pounds quickly.   But just like with other fad or trendy diets, my lost pounds found their way back shortly after a return to my “normal diet.”   According to research I found on WebMD.com, “The Cabbage Soup Diet is essentially a modified fast, containing so few calories that dieters will lose weight ..read more

For me, three meals a day without snacks is a jail sentence and a dieting plan that’s bound for failure.   But you know what? Snacking is not only good for you, but it’s also a great way to stick with a weight loss plan!   Registered dietitian and good friend Shauna Schultz says, “If you view snacking as a bad thing, think again! If you go too long without food in between meals, your body starts to run low on fuel and that can spell trouble when it comes time for your next meal. “Snacks help fill the gap in between meals and if planned properly can help you meet your nutrient needs for the day ..read more

So many things in life seem to get better with age.  Cheese … wine … our financial portfolios (hopefully) … and our maturity – to name a few.   One thing that doesn’t age so well is food in our digestive tracts.  When we eat, the food goes into our stomachs and awaits enzyme release that begins the process of breaking down and removing the vitamins and minerals for our body to use.  Not everything is utilized; the waste passes through our digestive system.   When we eat a meal composed of the average American diet – one loaded with proteins and processed carbohydrates – we begin a distillation ..read more

Before I started slimming down and living healthier through Meal Plan Map, I hated holidays because they forced me to work harder to meet my editorial deadlines.   Now I fear time away from work because it forces me to survive days of unstructured eating!   I know as I change my behaviors of eating, exercising and coping I will be more confident in my ability to have fun without acting like the proverbial kid in a candy shop when faced with back yard barbecues and foods by the tableful!   For the first time in I don’t know how long, I have made it through a holiday – Independence Day – without ..read more
