Scranton Prep’s quest for a District 2 Class 2A championship ended with a loss to rival Crestwood last week. However, the Cavaliers secured a spot in the PIAA playoffs for the first time in the program’s history. Tuesday afternoon — weather permitting — the Cavaliers will open the state tournament against defending state champion Bishop Shanahan at Harriton High School in Rosemont, Pa. The District 2 Committee set the brackets, locations, and times for the approaching playoffs which are set to begin Thursday. In Class 3A, District 2 teams are involved in subregional tournaments. The girls teams will battle with State College from District 6, while Delaware Valley finds itself among District 11 teams for the boys tournament. When Valley View lost in the PIAA Class 4A Baseball Final at Medlar Field last week, it brought an official close to the 2017-18 Scholastic Sports Season. The 2017-2018 scholastic sports season saw teams and individuals dominate. Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association teams won 13 District 2 team championships in the spring. With lacrosse gaining in popularity and participation increases as Abington Heights and Lakeland officially add boys teams next spring, the time had come for The Times-Tribune Sports Staff to select its inaugural All-Region team. This is a co-ed team that recognized 7 girls athletes, and 7 boys athletes who had outstanding seasons. It’s April 23 and the Wyoming Valley Conference lacrosse season has, for the most part, reached the mid-way point. And this has been one of the most exciting first four weeks the young conference has ever enjoyed. Now remember, the WVC is still in its infancy, started officially in 2013. For the first four seasons, Delaware Valley, which already had an established program that competed against teams from New York and played at the district and state level tournaments, had the upper hand when this all started, and it showed in the results. The weather hasn’t been cooperating with any spring sports seasons. Boys and girls lacrosse has gotten off to a start, however, and no team played better than Scranton Prep in the opening week. Scranton Prep players knew heading into the start of the season it could get a good gauge of where the program stands after an 8-5 record and first-round District 2 playoff loss in 2017.
