National Highways is delivering a government commitment to add more than 150 emergency areas to motorways across the country including several sections of the M25 and surrounding motorways. Work to install additional emergency areas is already taking place along the M1 corridor from junction 16 up to junction 35a. The car parts marketplace, Ovoko used historical data from the Department for Transport to discover the areas of the UK with the fewest collisions on average per billion vehicle miles between 2013 and 2022. It was discovered that Perth and Kinross in Scotland is statistically the UK’s safest area to drive in. Between 2013 and 2022, there were 122.73 collisions on average per billion vehicle miles. New research conducted by the vehicle checking company, Motorscan has revealed the areas in England with the worst roads, based on the average percentage of roads requiring maintenance between 2018 and 2023.  The study analysed data from the Department for Transport, which showed historical road condition statistics for every English local authority. Trial of New Traffic Camera Technology Gains Support

A trail of new traffic camera technology that was first launched in 2021 by National Highways has gained the support of 10 more police forces from across the UK. These new cameras can detect if a motorist is not wearing a seatbelt or if a driver is using a mobile phone. This data is then processed and sent to the police.
