Raising a Glass to Texas Women Winemakers

Instead of my usual roundup of what’s going on in Texas Wine Country, I wanted to take the opportunity during March to highlight some fabulous women in Texas wine, particularly Texas women winemakers. To be sure, Texas has a good number of women doing great things in wine, but female winemakers are scarce, but slowly continuing to increase. Yes, this is a little later than I wanted to be, because Paris. But better late than never. At least it’s still March! And I did include a few very cool events in addition to covering our fabulous Texas women winemakers. Champagne + Eiffel Tower candy = a h ..read more

Enchanting Évora Portugal: Gateway to the Alentejo Wine Region

Y’all! Come with me to Portugal. I’ve legit been stalking Portugal’s Golden Visa program which offers the opportunity to become a citizen after 5 years once you make a modest economic investment into the country. I’m ready, but am having a more difficult time convincing Mr. Corkscrew. We’ll see. In the meantime, I guess I’ll have to be happy with short visits whenever I get the chance. And why not Évora, Portugal? The next time you fly into Lisbon and are trying to decide whether to go north to Porto or head south for the road less traveled, definitely head south because you want to experience ..read more

Yes! There are Wines for all the Mardi Gras Foods
The Corkscrew Concierge

While folks are all geeked out about Valentine’s Day, at our house, it’s all about Mardi Gras. The house has been decorated in purple, green, and gold and we’ve consumed our fair share of king cake - hello Gambino’s praline king cake! Given that Mr. Corkscrew hails from southern Louisiana, which is ground central for all things Creole, Cajun, and Mardi Gras, the cuisines of the region often show up in our kitchen. And since my mantra is “there is a wine for everything” I’ve spent a fair amount of time figuring out the perfect wines for all the Mardi Gras foods. I’ve worked my way through the l ..read more

Happy New Year y’all. Yes, I know it’s February now, but since I took off January from my roundup, I figured better late than never. Plus, January was a bit of a shit show with all sorts of f*ckery as it relates to #LawyerLife (like should I just escape and retire now?!) and tennis and basketball for Thing 1 and Thing 2. I also just needed to get my life together (a little) and my head in the right place. Thankfully, the life and head are a little better, which means it’s time to see what’s going on in Texas Wine Country ..read more

7 Reasons to Visit Alentejo Portugal NOW!

Along with Anguilla, Alentejo is one of those places I visited recently that really spoke to my heart. Located in southern Portugal and a short drive from Lisbon (about an hour and a half), the Alentejo region is full of raw beauty. With sunny days tempered by cool, breezy nights, it is blessed with wide open spaces, gentle plains, and blue skies that go on forever. Yeah, except when I was there and then it rained. Like the whole time. I can’t tell you how many people told me that it rarely rains in Alentejo while I was struggling with my poodle hair and giving the side-eye to everyone. L ..read more

Beyond Champagne – Traditional Method Sparkling Wine Around the World Worthy for Toasting

I love bubbly! And I enjoy and appreciate it from places around the world. Of course, champagne is always king, but there are so many regions doing great things with sparkling wine. And many are even making wines in the “Traditional Method,” which is the method with a second fermentation that is used to produce champagne. It would be a shame to limit yourself to just champagne. Plus, your wallet will thank you when purchasing many of them. Let’s explore some sparkling wine around the world ..read more

Affordable Italian Wines That Go From the Party to Chillin by the Fireplace

If ever there was a country that provided food-friendly wines that are at home with holiday parties and meals, it’s Italy. We tend to entertain “in bulk” and often need affordable wines that won’t break the bank when we attempt to buy half a case or more. Sure there are those pricey Brunellos, Barolos, and Super Tuscans that collectors (including me) like to keep in the cellar, but when you’re entertaining a group, something a bit more affordable is definitely in order. Italy is one of those countries that provides tremendous value for wines - if you know where to look! And the wines tend ..read more

An Alexander Valley & Dry Creek Valley Wine Weekend

One of the hardest things about visiting wine country is deciding where to visit. In a region like Sonoma that produces a wide variety of wines, I find that I’m especially torn. One of the things I’m always trying to avoid is zig-zagging back and forth and wasting precious time. Who wants to spend half the trip in a car? On my last trip, which was definitely focused on Pinot Noir and bubbly (mainly from the Russian River Valley) we spent almost a week in Healdsburg and were able to really take our time. Other Sonoma trips saw me hanging out in Carneros at the very south end of Sonoma. Make no ..read more

Beyond France – Cabernet Franc Around the World

If I’m picking favorites (and I usually try not to), when it comes to Cabernet Sauvignon versus Cabernet Franc, I’m ‘Team Cabernet Franc.’ All day. While there are certainly many similarities between Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon, there are also some notable differences. Cab Franc tends to be less tannic, a bit lighter bodied, with more notable acidity. Pesky green notes can sometimes show up, but a winemaker with a deft hand can tame the greenness. Spice and pepper notes are also common in Cab Franc. And one of the big things that puts a check in Cab Franc’s column for me is that it is incredib ..read more
