Colors and wooden wharfs at Bakklandet - Trondheim
Norway Travel Guide
by Sven-Erik Knoff

When you are in Trondheim, you cannot miss seeing and visiting the signature wooden wharfs along the river Nidelven. The wharfs have a long history as storage facilities and loading/unloading cargo from the ships that came with traders from all over. The oldest wharfs in Trondheim was built around 1700 on both sides of the river Nidelven and the best-preserved wharfs today are the ones on the Bakklandet side, between the Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro) and Bakke Bridge (Bakke bro) as you can see on the photo. Several fires through the years have been a threat to keeping the wharfs, and ..read more

Secret waterfall
Norway Travel Guide

I stumbled over this location some years ago, and I couldn't get it out of my head ever since. Last nigh the weather looked promising, and I decided to take the trip. The map told me that there was a good chance for sunlight at the peaks, but I wasn't sure because of the high mountains nearby. Fortunately everything was as I hoped for, and I could take the shots I have had in mind for so long. This is a hidden waterfall in Flakstad municipality, Lofoten islands. It's location is not far from the main road, between Vareid and Kilan, but I don't think I have seen this particular fall i ..read more

Historical Beach of Mølen
Norway Travel Guide

Norway might be most famous for it’s dramatic landscapes in Northern Norway and beautiful fjords in the west. These places may be a photographers main locations to visit in Norway, but the east of Norway also has some beautiful scenery and history to share. One of my go-to seascape locations here in the east is a beautiful beach called Mølen. I would most definetly not recommend going here to get your tan on and sunbathe, as this is the beach in Norway with greatest density of pebbles in Norway. In other words not the most comfortable place to lie down. If you however are interested in beautif ..read more

Aurora Borealis: Myths and Legends
Norway Travel Guide
by Renate Westlien

The origin of the northern lights have various explanations in folklore and mythology. The lights have been described in ancient times by indigenous peoples, polar explorers and even mentioned in the Old Testament. This is the explanation given by the Sami people. The Sami people in the North, indigenous to Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, believed that the fires in the sky were the souls of the dead and that they had magical effects. Sami shaman drums often had symbols that depicted these fires. When the aurora blazed in the sky you should be careful and stay inside and the children ..read more

Summiting the tallest mountain on Senja island

You don’t necessarily need great weather to enjoy the great outdoors in the northern parts of Norway. Landscapes still come out exceptionally beautiful despite fog and clouds, and makes it all look even more dramatic. This trip makes the perfect example. We pitched our tents the day before, just by the foot of the mountain, Breidtind. Our night was notjng else but breathtaking, with the fog in the valleys and fjords and the midnight sun shining through the crisp air, touching our cheeks. The day started out quite cloudy, and not too warm. Weird, because the weather forecast told us it was g ..read more

The return of the sun
Norway Travel Guide
by Anne Olsen-Ryum

Imagine living in a place where you are not able to see the sun for two whole months - a place where the sun disappears in November and does not return until late January. Do you think that sounds awful or depressing? Living in Northern Norway, in a small place in Finnmark called Hasvik; I can assure you that it is not. At least I do not think so. We call the period of the year when the sun is below the horizon for The Polar Night period. I think it is one of the finest times of the year. The light can be so magical that sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming. Despit ..read more

Tips for the best flights to Lofoten islands
Norway Travel Guide
by Stian Klo

The easiest way to travel to the renowned Lofoten archipelago in Northern Norway is via Oslo Gardermoen airport (OSL code). From there, you have two choices. You can either fly to Harstad/Narvik Evenes airport (EVE code), pick up a rental car, and drive about 4 hours southwest to Lofoten. Alternatively, you can simply fly via Bodø airport (BOO code), and connect with another domestic flight to Leknes airport (LKN code). The latter solution puts you smack in the middle of Lofoten, and you can easily rent a car at the airport and start your Arctic adventure from there. Domestic flights in Norway ..read more

Rorbuer: Fishermen's cabins
Norway Travel Guide
by Carina Hansen

If you have been in northern Norway earlier you are probably familiar with these red cozy wood cabins called fishermens cabins, or “rorbuer” in Norwegian. The cabins are found along the coast of Norway, especially in the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, and are packed with history and character. The Lofoten Islands has one of the most fertile fishing grounds in the world, and the fishermen cabins were originally built to shelter local and visiting fishermen who came to the Islands to participate in the fishery during the fishing season. Even though fishery is still the most important li ..read more

The Northern Lights in Norway
Norway Travel Guide
by Carina Hansen

If seeing the Northern Lights is on your bucket list, then Norway is one of your safest choices. The most frequent question I get is when and where you can see it. The Northern Lights are visible between September and April on clear dark skies, above the Arctic Circle. In Norway, the Arctic Circle is located a bit south of the town Bodø. The lights will also be visible south of the Arctic Circle if it’s really strong, but my best recommendation is to travel to the Lofoten Islands or Tromsø, which both is located well above the Arctic Circle. Here in Lofoten where I live, there is a good cha ..read more
