Happy Birthday, David Chiang! 生日 快乐 姜大衛

By Kim August === David* “Da Wei” Chiang remains one of Shaw Brothers most beloved performers for his superb acting skills and whimsical, acrobatic martial arts. David Chiang’s ease on camera can be traced back to his cinematic beginnings as a child star in the 50s and early 60s. While performing as a stuntman with Liu Chia Liang and Tong Gai, he caught the eye of legendary director Chang Cheh. Impressed with the youth’s agility and ability to speak Mandarin, Chang offered the young man a chance at stardom. While David understood acting would mean a pay cut, he was eager to follow in hi ..read more

THE SAVAGE FIVE (1974) REVIEW
Celestial Pictures | The Shaw Brothers Official Web Site
by Celestial Pictures

By Will Kouf of Silver Emulsion Films ===== Contrary to many Chang Cheh films from this mid-’70s period, The Savage Five is not focused on kung fu. Martial arts are present and integral to the story, but those looking for unforgettable hand-to-hand battles will be better served by other films such as Heroes Two, Five Shaolin Masters, or any number of favorites. The Savage Five works instead because it presents an intense and emotional variation on The Seven Samurai if the bandits never left the town, and the heroes had to rise from the ranks of the oppressed towns ..read more

By Matt L. Reifschneider of Blood Brother Film Reviews === Every year, I attempt to craft a new list dedicated to my Shaw Brothers addiction, and every year I seem to give myself an aneurysm trying to whittle down the massive Shaw Brothers catalog into a theme and then into a list. This year in particular, I have attempted to do the impossible: make a top ten list for one of my favorites directors of all time, Chang Cheh. As you can tell, since I made a top 15 list, I have already failed. Chang Cheh’s legendary status within the realms of cinema cannot be understated. Not only was he a p ..read more

THE FLYING DAGGER (1969) REVIEW
Celestial Pictures | The Shaw Brothers Official Web Site
by Celestial Pictures

By Peter Altman (@misterlychee) === THE FLYING DAGGER, directed by Cheh Chang, is a Kung fu film with a deep emotional center. In the opening of the movie, Yu Ying (Pei-Pei Cheng) happens upon the scene of a rape and double murder. Outraged, she kills the perpetrator, son of the leader of the infamous Green Dragon Clan chief Jiao Lei (Chih-Ching Yang). To avenge the death of his son, Chief Jiao attacks Yu Ying’s father, Yu Yuan (Miao Ching) who, though severely injured, manages to escape.   Chief Jiao is known as the Flying Dagger for his almost peerless knife throwing ability. He hunts d ..read more

THE FLYING GUILLOTINE (1975)

By Brendan Davis of The Bedrock Blog === Inventive weapons are one of the things I love in wuxia and kung fu movies. From the locking swords of One-Armed Swordsman to the Five Venom Spider of Web of Death, they come in all shapes and sizes, but always add a sense of danger and creativity. One of the more memorable entries in this category is The Flying Guillotine, a terrifying weapon that drapes victim’s heads and decapitates in a single clean bite. There are quite a few Flying Guillotine movies, my favorites are Master of the Flying Guillotine and Vengeful Beauty, but The Flying Guillotine, d ..read more

Ramblings on Chang Cheh’s ‘THE DUEL’

By Kim August === Where else but in a Chang Cheh movie would frenemies comment on each other’s knife skills as they slice through their targets like butter? The fight in question happens early in The Duel as rival gang bloodshed turns inward toward the Ren clan. Brothers Ren Lin (Ku Fung) and Ren Jie (Ti Lung) are loyal to Mr. Shen, the local godfather. Seems the old fellow wants to retire, but is quite fond of Ren Jie to take his place. Shen’s second-in-command, the swarmy Gan Wen Bin wants the post and hires an assassin, the Rambler, to kill the godfather instead. “Rambler” Jian Nan’s ..read more

REVIEW OF THE NEW GAME OF DEATH (1975)
Celestial Pictures | The Shaw Brothers Official Web Site
by Celestial Pictures

By Will Kouf of Silver Emulsion Films === Technically speaking, The New Game of Death isn’t a Shaw Brothers movie. It’s an independent Taiwanese production (the only film from the Yu-Yun Film Co.), but Shaw often picked up films like this for distribution, so I’m guessing that’s what happened here. Unlike many of the films that Shaw only distributed, The New Game of Death received a restoration and Region 3 DVD release from Celestial Pictures as they worked their way through the Shaw catalog. To see a Bruceploitation film in its raw, original form is a rare treat — it was d ..read more

THE DRAGON MISSILE, OR THERE AND BACK AGAIN: A VILLAIN’S TALE
Celestial Pictures | The Shaw Brothers Official Web Site

By Matt L. Reifschneider of Blood Brothers Film Reviews === In terms of Shaw Brothers films, The Dragon Missile is about as straightforward as it gets and, for better or worse, it doesn’t necessarily strike out as particularly top notch in any of the genre categories. Even the biggest gimmick of the film, the titular weapons that Lo Lieh’s hired killer uses to decapitate his enemies and cut down random things with big flashy sparks, are essentially flying guillotine knockoffs – which is fitting since the original Flying Guillotine film was directed by the same man. Still, it’s h ..read more
