In 2009, Avatar well and truly took over the world. For months all you could hear about was the unrivalled scope, incredible animation and immersive experience of the fantasy epic – and for good reason, at the time it felt groundbreaking. Star Wars is one of the largest film franchises ever. The galaxy far, far away shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, with new instalments, re-writes and retcons adding to the franchise every year since 2015.
With the unusual ordering of the films’ releases, it’s not that easy to decide which order it’s best to watch them in: do you start with the first films – 1977-1983’s original trilogy – then go backwards to the prequels, later skipping forwards to the new Rey trilogy? Die-hard fans might argue the release-day route, but others will encourage following the timeline – and some ..read more

Hard Eight (1996)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s neo-noir debut forged relationships with actors Philip Seymour Hoffman, John C Reilly, Philip Baker Hall and Melora Walters, who would each appear in multiple Anderson movies.
Boogie Nights (1997)
Based on a mockumentary Anderson made while he was still in high school, Boogie Nights told the schoolboy-pleasing rise-and-fall story of anatomically blessed porn star Dirk Diggler, played by Mark Wahlberg in a masterful comic performance.

Battle Royale is a riotous dystopian bloodbath. Its premise is simple: Japan’s government, fearful of the country’s youth and teenage delinquency, passes the Battle Royale Act, where secondary school kids are forced into a kill-or-be-killed arena of combat. The 2000 film was a huge hit, inspiring The Hunger Games and a swathe of Hollywood-made YA sci-fi franchises in its wake.
As with George Miller’s iconic Mad Max (1979), situating the story a few years from the present-day allowed Battle Royale’s hyperbolic qualities to reflect historic and contemporary social anxieties all within a futuris ..read more
