Does the VST Basket Live up to the Hype?
Common Man Coffee Roasters
by Matthew Patrick McLauchlan

VST baskets are not a new piece of equipment by any means. Since their release around 2-3 years ago, many cafés and home espresso enthusiasts have been sold on the idea of a precision-engineered, optimised filter basket and have switched their standard, machine-included baskets for shiny new VSTs. For a seemingly simple set of changes, VST baskets carry plenty of claims which seem to justify investing in them. They address the lack of quality and consistency in the filter-basket manufacturing process and they are designed as a filter basket with precise dimensions, standardised filter h ..read more

Having recently sailed past the one-year mark of operation, The Lokal has firmly secured its place as a favorite fixture on Neil Rd. Googling the café will produce a multitude of glowing reviews, however all running with a similar theme- “Australian style café”. Whilst stated in flattering terms, and for good reason, The Lokal has very much come in to its own, with Chef Darren Farr successfully curating a menu which celebrates such iconic Australian menu must-haves (read: you can get your avocado toast and vegemite fix here), whilst also paying tribute to local faves, with weekly special dish ..read more

Common Man Coffee Roasters
by Matthew Patrick McLauchlan

One of Common Man’s core goals is to actively foster the development of a community around the specialty coffee industry, cultivating a culture of sharing and learning together in the interest of progressing specialty coffee in the Singaporean market. To that end that Xin Loke (our super star roaster/account manager), teamed up with Bronwen Serna (director of coffee and education for The New Black), for the first ever ‘SG Pow-Wow.’ The Pow-Wow was an opportunity for those involved in Singapore’s specialty coffee industry to get together for a conversation around a specific theme. A Night in North Sumatra
Common Man Coffee Roasters

What was conceived nearly two years ago on the steps of 22 Martin Road here in Singapore, came a full circle at Common Man Coffee Roasters’ (CMCR) inaugural Curated Cupping event on the 17th of June this year. It was at the grand opening of the CMCR café back in 2013 that the idea for the organic Tiga Raja coffee mill in Simalungun, North Sumatra was first germinated. At the risk of sounding hopelessly sentimental, it was fitting that while standing outside that same café on 17th June this year, a group of us noticed the first bloom of delicate white flowers from the coffee plants that stand ..read more
