¿Pedestrian zones?

by Margaret L. I once thought it was strange to walk out of an MU building and nearly collide with a truck on a sidewalk. Like, what are you doing here MU Maintenance? How did you even get here? This is a sidewalk! Cars do not belong here! Now that I’m in Spain, though, I wouldn’t think twice about such an occurrence. The lines between pedestrian trafficked areas and automotive trafficked areas is extraordinarily blurred in Salamanca, Spain. Even the places you’d imagine are solely pedestrian, full of stone benches and potted plants sporadically placed along the path, like those of Columbia’s ..read more

by Kadie C. It was Friday, March 20, around 1:30 a.m. and I was still awake working on my homework for my Norwegian class. That evening had been the first real chance that I had been able to sit down and finally direct my focus on my studies again. A week before, all students studying on international exchange received information delineating that due to the COVID-19 pandemic reaching Europe, Trump had announced the suspension of all travel between the U.S. and Europe, and all students were to make arrangements to return to the U.S., or begin drafting their application for an appeal to stay. by Grace M. I am here. I am to leave. All cleared to stay. Oh! I am really leaving this time. Okay. Farewell, New Zealand. Missouri, USA, here I come. Such were the circumstances surrounding my last week and a half at Lincoln University, Lincoln, New Zealand. Like many other students across Mizzou’s campus and the United States (the world, included), for my own well-being and that of my host country I asked to return to native soil. The scramble of trying to figure out all I needed to do was stressful, but the worst was the fear I would not be able to continue on with my courses. That was the ..read more

by Kylie G. Wow. I definitely didn’t expect to be writing my first post for this blog while sitting in the San Francisco airport on a layover back to Kansas City, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. That’s right, my semester in Sydney is over after just a month. Well, five weeks to be exact. But they were without a doubt the best five weeks of my life, which I think is the only reason I can still even write this post. I feel like this is a unique opportunity to explain to whoever reads this that you absolutely can – and will – fall in love with Australia in the blink of an eye. If you do t ..read more

Creative connection

by Kelli D. Have you ever fallen half in love with a stranger? The moment when you meet eyes with someone on the bus or you say hello in the museum, never to meet again? These fleeting encounters are a unique kind of connection enhanced by the lack of communication after the experience. Last week, I was on my way to the beach to paint when I heard the sound of a cello reverberating across the plaza. It was lovely. I scurried over to the musician and danced for a bit before dropping a few euros into his case. Reluctant to leave, I swayed happily for five minutes to his rendition of Hallelujah ..read more
