Abbott Endorses Border-Area Incumbent For Key Texas Congressional Seat
The Hayride

An expected runoff win for a border-area GOP congressional incumbent became almost certain after an endorsement by Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday. Abbott endorsed U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales in the Republican primary runoff — much-needed ammo for the incumbent against those who have charged he is insufficiently conservative and those who are behind Second Amendment proponent Brandon Herrera, “the AK Guy” on social media and streaming video. In a media statement, Abbott had much praise for Iraq War Navy veteran Gonzales, who is seeking a third term after succeeding Republican Will Hurd. “Tony G ..read more

Criminal charges proposed for undocumented immigrants entering Louisiana
The Hayride

(By Steve Wilson/The Center Square) – Legislation proposing criminal charges for undocumented immigrants entering Louisiana has passed a committee in the House of Representatives. The bill moving forward Wednesday from the Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice is similar to legislation in neighboring Texas. It passed the panel 7-4 and was opposed by the Southern Poverty Law Center and migrant groups. Next would be a House floor vote. The Senate, by 28-11 on April 9, has already passed Senate Bill 388 sponsored by Sen. Valarie Hodges, R-Denham Springs. If it becomes la ..read more

It Might Be Up To This Guy Whether Your Insurance Rates Go Lower
The Hayride
by MacAoidh

It’s no secret that the cost of insurance, and particularly car and home insurance, two areas where rates in Louisiana are the worst (or at least among the worst) in America, is the most pressing issue our voters are facing today. This legislative session has not seen a major focus on a huge tort reform push, something most people seem to think is the key to bringing down insurance rates, but that isn’t to say that significant legislation isn’t moving on that issue. Whether anything gets done to reduce insurance rates is still very much a question, though. One bill we’re pretty sure will pass ..read more

MARSH MAN MASSON: Gotta Try THIS At THIS Bridge! (Catch & Cook)

A year ago or so, I discovered a bait that kept producing speckled trout, even when I was targeting other species. It’s not really marketed or thought of as a speckled trout lure, but who cares? For whatever reason, they love it. I took it this week to the train trestle that crosses eastern Lake Pontchartrain, and as I suspected would happen, the fish ate it up. Check out the video for all the details! #fishing #speckledtrout #louisianafishing We rent out our condo in Perdido, Fla.! SADOW: Shreveport Voters Face Tough Call on Tax Hikes
The Hayride
by Jeff Sadow
10h ago
It’s a tough call this Saturday on Shreveport approving property tax hikes – necessary bromide or throwing good money after bad? Across three proposals, the city plans to raise around $256 million for capital items. Almost half would go towards roads, streets, bridges, and surface and subsurface drainage systems (2.45 mills), while nearly a third would go to water and sewerage systems (1.6 mills), with the remainder going to public safety, buildings, and recreation (0.95 mills). Unlike measures to fund continuing government operations, the millages will vary depending upon bond issuance amount ..read more

CALUDA: Biden’s LNG pause threatens Louisiana economy and jobs
The Hayride
by Guest Posts

Louisiana’s lawmakers are working tirelessly to write our comeback story and revive our economy. Meanwhile, the Biden administration’s January decision to hit pause on liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects has been a major setback for our state’s economy and job market. The administration claims the pause would allow the government to take a step back and have a “hard look” at the impact of LNG on our economy and environment. But Louisiana families know the impact of a robust energy economy: good jobs, secure livelihoods, and resources that allow for effective stewardship of our natural ..read more

I’ve Had Enough Of This Bashing Of Mike Johnson

Since the votes over the weekend to dole out foreign aid around the world, coming on top of some other votes for things like renewing FISA, the Right – including a couple of Hayride contributors like Jeff Crouere yesterday and Walt Garlington today – has come out of the woodwork to savage House Speaker Mike Johnson for the outcomes his body is delivering. I think this puts me in a lousy position. Mike is a personal friend of mine, I know him to be a conservative no less committed and passionate than Jeff and Walt are, for example, and he and I share the same view of the present time and its pl ..read more

GARLINGTON: What Speaker Johnson Can Learn From Saint George
The Hayride
by Walt Garlington

The checklist of Speaker Mike Johnson’s betrayals has grown fairly lengthy in just a short time.  Jeff Crouere gives a good summary: At one time, Johnson was regarded as a staunch supporter of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement. In fact, his nickname was “MAGA Mike.” His lifetime Heritage Action voting record was 90%, but, in this session of Congress, it has plummeted to 53%. As House Speaker, Johnson supported the horrific omnibus spending bill, which fully funded the Department of Justice and the FBI, which has been weaponized against President Donald Trump and MA ..read more

“We must protect the innocent, or else we will be left in a world where sex trafficking and child molestation is the new societal norm. As I am becoming more mature, I am paralyzed by the thought that as time goes by, my children could be the very next ones that a pedophile decides to pursue, and I know damn well that I would do anything–and I mean anything–to put a stop to this disgusting fad.” -Unnamed 17-year-old student’s essay in Jeff LeJeune’s English 102 course The post Quote of the Day, April 24, 2024 appeared first on The Hayride ..read more
