November 2nd | The Lanes Though it’s been a while since Grandma’s House played their last show, you wouldn’t be able to tell from their performance tonight, brought to us by Gravy Train at The Lanes. Playing one of their biggest shows yet, in support of their destructive new single ‘No Place Like Home’, the band have never sounded better. Grandma’s House have quickly made a name for themselves in the Bristol music scene over the past couple of years and it’s visible through the excitement in the room before they even arrive on stage. Despite their heavy, self-dubbed “surfy post-punk” sound, th ..read more

First Look // Melotone – @ Home // Live
Bristol in Stereo | LIVE.MUSIC.CULTURE

Back in April, we brought you Melotone‘s Live Lounge session, The Nicklin Show. It was named after their then semi-absent bassist, who was isolating in Birmingham and having to join them via a TV screen. And here we are now in late October, where so many things have changed, so many things haven’t changed and so many things have changed and then changed back to how they were before they changed. But one thing has categorically altered for Melotone @ Home // Live – the band is all together in perfect completion. In sun-blessed garden surroundings, that will remind us of better summery time ..read more

TUNGZ – WHY DO ANYTHING? // EP REVIEW

Tungz | WHY DO ANYTHING? EP HEIST OR HIT | October 30th Those Tungz chaps are inquisitive fellows. If the EP’s title and the titles of two tracks (‘What For?’ and ‘Can’t We Just Be Friends Again?’) aren’t enough of a clue, you just have to tap into their various lyrics and you’ll find them riddled with interrogatives. Similarly, when you hear, “My mind’s a cigarette. It never gets a rest,” during the second track, ‘Somebody To Get Shy With’ (feat. Bad Sounds), you’ll be feigning surprise at that revelation for approximately no time whatsoever. Why Do Anything? is six tracks of philosophical fi ..read more

The Loco Klub returns with Ishmael Ensemble

If you’re feeling like 2020 is the year that largely takes but never gives back, pick up your going out mask and socially distance your way down to Temple Meads for The Loco Klub as it returns on November 14th with a big offering, headlined by Ishmael Ensemble. Like all the venues in the city, they shut their doors in March with uncertainty as to when they could throw them open again. It’s heartening to see another Bristol venue come back from quarantined quiet. In the era of ‘Hands. Face. Space’, they’ve sought to create the right kind of space for a shared moment to happen. Also, to create a ..read more

Nuala Honan // Live Review & Photoset

October 12th | The Lanes Photos: Lee Ramsey In a week when the Chancellor of the Exchequer was giving all creative souls in the UK cause to doubt whether their gifts and chosen careers were ‘viable’, Nuala Honan took to the stage at The Lanes to give us all proof (if ever we needed it) that the ability to make live music is in fact enviable and invaluable. Courtesy of the Corona-resistant forces of promoters Gravy Train, who are keeping the flag flying in the most viable way possible in conjunction with The Lanes, we were seated and distanced. The distanced aspect of shows, odd as it may feel ..read more

Flohio is consistently at the top of her game and continues to be in a league of her own with her potent, quick-witted flow. ‘Unveiled’ sees Flohio deliver searing bars with swaggering confidence. Combined with the accompanying visuals by Daniel Sannwald, ‘Unveiled’ offers a heady intensity that is claustrophobic, hypnotic and addictive. Elsewhere this week Anjimile has released their stunning debut album Giver Taker. There’s new Rico Nasty, Flo Milli, HEALTH and Jamila Woods. Plus more locally, new tunes from Pet Shimmers, My Octopus Mind and Rosehip Teahouse. Not to mention witch house ..read more

IDLES – Ultra Mono | Album Review
Bristol in Stereo | LIVE.MUSIC.CULTURE

If there’s one thing we can safely say about Bristol’s IDLES, it’s that they have the ability to capture the public mood. With their 2018 sophomore album, Joy As An Act Of Resistance, the band delved into Brexit-torn Britain, discussing misplaced patriotism (‘G.R.E.A.T.’) and the contribution of immigrants (‘Danny Nedelko’), alongside wider issues such as toxic masculinity (‘Samaritans’) and the dangerous popular press (‘Rottweiler’). Despite its typically abrasive punk sound, the positive energy of the record captured people’s collective imagination, and the album was a surprise hit, going to ..read more

Other highlights this week from Pa Salieu, Oklou, Herizen, Lava La Rue, Marie Davidson, Blue Hawaii and many more. Enjoy! Subscribe to our Spotify Tracks of the Week playlist here.
