Take a Hike

We gave ourselves an extra couple of hours on Tuesday before voting…so we went to Anglers for fish and chips and then searched the phone for a hike that was close by in order to get some fresh air before the drizzle set in for two days. It turns out that not even 5 minutes from the campground there’s a beautiful hiking trail maintained by the Coastal Mountain Land Trust that follows the Mill Brook. It’s accessed through the Village Cemetery on Mt Ephraim Rd just past Tozier’s Market. A hike along the water, an interesting cemetery and a convenient stop for dinner supplies…total score! An Armenian Picnic is a traditional party with food, music and community in the summer air…we’ve been doing it for as long as history has been recorded. On July 28th, we’ll dance to live Middle Eastern and Balkan music, eat shish kebab, freshly baked Lamejun (Armenian flatbread) from the woodfired pizza oven and other savory dishes served in the garden.  We’ll satisfy our sweet tooth with homemade paklava filled with pistachios and walnuts and dripping in honey syrup. If you’ve been looking for a creative party for the entire family, this is the day to satisfy all of your senses! We’re w ..read more

The Wall Came Down
Searsport Shores

If you were following Maine weather in January, you know that on the coast we were hit with two storms of a lifetime…and the aftermath left us with a demolished seawall, great swaths of debris and the “opportunity” to rebuild with a better understanding of climate change. The first storm tore the seawall to shreds but the second storm that was coming just two days later frightened us even more because without the seawall, how do we protect all of the front row sites? (not to mention the junipers & roses we’ve been tending for 20 years). Literally, imagine the calvary coming to our aid. A ..read more

We’ll have a ‘unique to New England’ version of a traditional Armenian-style hamburger: Losh kebab patties spiced with red pepper paste and coriander stuffed into freshly baked pita bread. The wood fired pizza oven will be blazing hot to cook the traditional lamajun, an Armenian flatbread in a quick three minutes. Your dinner plate will be piled high with fragrant pilaf, a warm chickpea & tomato salad, homemade hummus and fresh greens.  Care for dessert? We’ve used our grandmother ..read more

Gee’s Bend – American Art at it’s Finest

Fiber College, Gee’s Bend and Strung Together – Part 2 of 3, by Terri Malloy When I first saw Gee’s Bend listed as an event, I didn’t know what it referred to other than it was a quilting workshop. Little did I know what a rich and deep rooted story there was behind The Quilter’s of Gee’s Bend. *Gee’s Bend is actually a block of land in Boykin, Alabama enclosed on three sides by the Alabama River in rural Wilcox County in Alabama’s Black Belt. It was named for Joseph Gee, a large landowner from Halifax County, N.C., who settled here in 1816. Gee brought 18 African-American slaves with him and ..read more

The Belfast Harbor will explode with makers, artisans, local foods and great music on June 24 & 25, 2023.  Want to turn it into a real adventure? Paddle a kayak from the campground (we have them for rent), leave it with the Harbor Mistress and spend a few hours wandering through the colorful stalls looking for treasures that make your visit to Maine even more memorable. I see on the schedule that Anni & the Rainmakers are performing at two on Saturday. Buy yourself a homemade lemonade from the Lions Club booth and sit back…you’re in small town, absolutely authentic Maine! I ..read more

Mud Season
Searsport Shores

What’s mud but soil in a very confused state??  Confusion is the word of the hour.  It’s cold, it’s hot, it’s too muddy to walk but the garden soil is frozen.  What clothes are going to work today? The Spring chores need to be done, but everything revolves around the weather. April is when reality collides with fantasy on multiple levels. When the park is buttoned down sometime in November, it feels like we have all the time in the world to dawdle in the studio, play music with friends and leisurely plan out our organizational tasks so that the following year (right now) we’ll ..read more
