How could this happen twice?

In July of 2022 I was surprised to see my 4 Runner in the image on Google Maps. Today I checked the link I send to Thomaston harbor and hard to imagine but there is my 4 Runner and boat trailer in the parking lot. Surprise again! Actually, in the full view I think I see the Lund passing by the launch on my way upriver but the image is just blurry enough that I can’t be sure. So perhaps Google is keeping a close eye on me or my vehicle is spending way too much time hanging around boat launch parking lots? Either way is pretty fun stuff to see it on the screen. The season is not over
Maine Outdoors Blog

It has slowed down though. There are trees changing to red here and there along the lakes and water temperatures have dropped from their summer highs. This is a seasonal business no doubt but there are seasons within seasons. For instance in the last two weeks I have enjoyed time with several fly fishing parties, some learning to fly fish and some accomplished anglers. A week or so ago I realized that I likely guided the last kids perch fishing trip for the season. Not because the fish are no longer cooperating but rather the kids are headed back to school. In many parts of the country, they ..read more

You know you are lucky when your street number and age are the same. At my current number it is cause for reflection. I have been incredibly fortunate. First, I lucked out when I married Argy. We took the leap in our twenties. Neither knowing what the future might hold but leaping right in. Together we have accomplished much. First we have two great sons both guides and teachers in different areas then either of their parents. Not carbon copies but different than us but with skills we can easily see were learned at an early age. Noah with Equinox Guiding Service and Nicholas with SPN tours&nb ..read more

Summer season flying by!

A rainy morning today has me at my desk catching up on office work. Hard to imagine but the summer season is half gone! We had a hot spell that made early afternoons uncomfortable and likely will have another. But as sure as the sun is rising a little later every day we are headed toward my favorite time of the year. While the weather will improve to be sure I will miss the family fishing trips of mid-summer that typically include someone catching their first fish and then going on to catch a bunch more. The boy on Saturday’s trip claimed 38; with multiple lines fishing at once I cannot verif ..read more

Latest Intern

Over the years I have been fortunate to have a few interns. Supposedly they were here to learn but usually I learned a great deal from them. First was Chris Taylor, then Brynna and now Eben. Unlike the first two Eben thinks that he would like ot be a guide. Here is Eben's introduciton. My name is Eben Weislogel and I am a recent graduate of Camden Hills regional high school. I started to fish before I could walk and since then I haven’t looked back. I picked up fly tying at seven years old, and from there was fortunate enough to learn the art of fly fishing. As an aspiring fly fisherman growi ..read more

Mid Summer Update

Here we are in the middle of our summer season here in Maine. The weather has been as you would expect warm inland (even hot at times) and much cooler on the saltwater. That point was made yesterday with a family from North Carolina on a Scenic Boat trip. As we got down to the Marshall Point lighthouse, I noticed that everyone was bundled in their sweatshirts; hoods up and tied snugly. We saw the lighthouse, took a few photos and quickly headed back upriver to where temperatures were much warmer, better suited to folks from further south. The next few days forecasts are calling for afternoon ..read more

Something new on the saltwater this morning

This this morning my client had good success casting surface poppers for stripers. The interesting part of the morning came well after sun up when we came on this group of seals working cooperatively to trap a school of pogies. I have seen two or three seals working together in the past, but this was a group of between 12 and 15 and as you can see part of their scheme was coming clear of the water and I assume this splash is to help chase or at least confuse the bait. Just when you think you've seen everything something new pops up, what a treat and as you can see the weather was picture perf ..read more

Water Bottle Dilemma
Maine Outdoors Blog
by Don Kleiner

It's important to stay hydrated on our trips. Being outside in the sun and wind can be dehydrating, which can make a morning on the water less enjoyable. Many years ago, I started providing reusable water bottles with the Maine Outdoors logo. This served two purposes: helping to keep you hydrated and reducing the use of disposable plastic bottles. When you think about it guides like me are huge users of those disposable plastic bottles. Over the years, we’ve given away metal water bottles, starting with a simple green logo and later transitioning to blue ones with a color logo. These bottles ..read more

Early June Fishing Report

The freshwater bass spawn was shorter than I remember with water temps going from 60 to 70 in near record time. A couple of changes that I have noticed the most interesting is that for a long time I thought of spawning bass as being in very shallow water, certainly less than 2 feet. The last few years I see the beds as deep as 12 feet with the majority in 5 or 6 feet of water. An interesting change and one I suspect is due to our high eagle population. Second I always felt that the bass on beds were smaller than the average fish in a body of water. Seems like now the average bedded fish is a ..read more

Today was perfect!

I have to admit I go on about how swell the weather and fishing are at times. Today though was just about perfect. As you can see the sky was a perfect blue, no wind and cooperative fish on Damariscotta Lake. I had to stop at the Bunker Hill Church on the way home and capture the scene from the top of the hill down toward the lake. All I can say is that you missed it, hope to share another perfect day with you soon! Share this:  ..read more
