Garrett Crochet struck out eight in the White Sox’ 1-0 loss to the Tigers on Thursday.

It feels like the 2023 White Sox season ended yesterday. That’s the problem. More recovery time would have been nice. Additional healing could have been helpful. Extra counseling might have done wonders. And I’m not sure I would have said “no” to electric-shock therapy.
The Sox lost 101 games last year and won’t be good this year, either. PECOTA, a computer system that predicts players’ and teams’ performances, puts the Sox’ chances of winning the World Series this season at 0%. Real ..read more

The White Sox’ Garrett Crochet throws in the first inning of the Opening Day loss to the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field.

If this is what the Garrett Crochet starting pitcher experience is going to be like, more of that, please, the White Sox ask.
Pitching six innings — more than most everyone anticipated in the left-hander’s first career start — Crochet was exceptional with eight strikeouts, no walks and one run allowed against the Tigers on Opening Day Thursday.
If only the White Sox had it in them to muster more than three hits against Tigers lefty Ta ..read more

Fans toast as they tailgate Thursday before the Chicago White Sox home opener against the Detroit Lions at Guaranteed Rate Field on the South Side.
Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times
The smoky aroma of hot dogs filled the air around Parking Lot A at Guaranteed Rate Field as beanbags thudded onto wooden boards and kids played catch with a tennis ball on a sunny but slightly chilly Thursday afternoon.
“I’m ready to get hurt again,” one fan said as he walked toward one of the parking lots near the stadium.
Expectations for the White Sox aren't high this season, and the prospect of a new ballpark in the ..read more

Mayor Brandon Johnson talks to reporters after a news conference Thursday.
David Struett/Sun-Times
Mayor Brandon Johnson has already cracked the door open to providing a public subsidy to build a new, $1.2 billion White Sox stadium in the South Loop, provided the team and its developer “put some skin in the game.”
On Thursday, he did the same for the Bears.
That’s despite the $1 billion price tag on the team’s ambitious plan to develop the land around a domed lakefront stadium with a hotel, sports museum and pedestrian bridge to Northerly Island. Plans also include expanding or moving ex ..read more

Jordan Leasure throws live batting practice at White Sox spring training in Glendale, Ariz.
John Antonoff/For the Sun-Times
First-time major leaguer Jordan Leasure said his White Sox teammates kept walking up to him at the ballpark to say, “stop smiling.”
“It’s hard not to,” Leasure said.
Indeed it is when you make a major league team for the first time and are getting ready for Opening Day. That was Leasure’s world Thursday after he won a spot in the White Sox bullpen in spring training.
“It was really cool. Walking into the clubhouse, trying to find my way in here, and then going out t ..read more

Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times
The weather may not scream "baseball!" yet but that won't stop Opening Day as the White Sox host the Tigers to kick off the 2024 season at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The game begins at 3:10 p.m. CT with Garrett Crochet taking the mound for the Sox against Detroit's Tarik Skubal, a hard-throwing lefty. NBC Sports Chicago will be airing local TV coverage starting at 2 p.m.
Rosters for Opening Day were finalized Wednesday when the Sox announced a 26-man roster with only four st ..read more

The White Sox begin their 2024 season Thursday at home against the Detroit Tigers.
Pat Nabong/Sun-Times file
White Sox fans didn’t have much to cheer about last season as the team lost 101 games and navigated through controversy after rumors of the team moving to Nashville and a shooting at Guaranteed Rate Field in August.
But the exciting prospect of a new stadium in the Loop and the return of Sox baseball gives fans a reason to be optimistic as the team opens their season at Guaranteed Rate Field at 3:10 p.m. Thursday against the Detroit Tigers.
Though marquee names like Dylan Cease an ..read more

John Schriffen and Steve Stone will make their regular-season debut together Thursday at the White Sox’ home opener.
Darren Georgia/White Sox
The biggest storyline of the White Sox’ season opener Thursday against the Tigers has nothing to do with the teams. Fans in attendance and those watching on TV might not even be able to see it play out.
Somewhere in Guaranteed Rate Field — maybe the Bard’s Room, a media-level hallway or on the field — new Sox TV voice John Schriffen will cross paths with former Sox TV voice Jason Benetti.
And it could be awkward.

It’s a new season, and a new Opening Day starter for the White Sox.
For Garrett Crochet, it’s a new job, one he has never held as a professional.
Starting pitcher, that is.
But Crochet, a first-round draft choice who turned heads with 101-, 102- and 103-mph velocity when called up shortly after he was selected in the first round in 2020, is the most exciting thing the Sox have going.
So, inject that into an O ..read more
