I have around $220k saved so far for retirement. With a monthly payment of $4.1k towards it. I am aiming for 3.3 million, and smartasset investment calculator suggests I can reach that in 18 years assuming 9% avg yrly return I also have a remaining mortgage debt of approx $220k with an interest rate of about 6.38%, it's a 15 yr mortgage and I'm a year in I have an extra $800 a month that I can put toward either. When I put it towards retirement, smartasset predicts that the time to reach 3.3 million decreases by a year BUT, when I apply the extra $800 to my mortgage instead, I can shorten my ..read more

How to repair my credit after unemployment

Hello all I am back on my feet after a rough patch but during this time all I was able to cover was my regular bills and medical bills so my credit cards went to all hell. 3 got cancelled, 2 of which I am on payment plans to remedy and one that is at a collections agency. So my credit is in the dumper currently. My questions are essentially what the best ways to build or otherwise improve my credit and what does it mean for me since those 3 cards were cancelled by their financial institutions as bad credit. Thanks! Any help is appreciated. submitted by /u/Ubsidian24 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m 31 and kind of just starting to really get into the swing of savings or even caring about finances the last few years. My folks grew up poor but started their own business and have always lived for opulence slightly above their means so I didn’t have a great example and have been trying to figure out how to do better on my own. My situation: I make 41K a year doing graphics production/design - which isn’t much for the national average but I live in a small town in central PA where it’s more than enough generally. It’s the most i’ve ever made. I’ve made a lot of job jumps the last couple y ..read more

Hey so I (30+F) married to a (40+M) and we’ve always held separate bank accounts which I have no issue with and would like to keep it this way. I’ve always been the bread winner and we’ve split expenses witb that in mind. For example I’ll handle the mortgage and he handles the bills and groceries and phone bills etc. it’s always worked pretty well for us and he doesn’t make much at his job but he likes it and he’s a hard worker. But I’ll admit I’m getting caught up with the whole social media videos of women saying their husbands are the full providers of the home and they get to keep their m ..read more

20 year old student ready to become financially independent

I’m currently a full time engineering student, but I feel very behind financially. I do not have credit yet, I’m still living with my parent, and I do not have my own income. The main reason why I do not have a job currently is because I do not have transportation and my city is not very public transportation accessible. However, I feel extremely guilty that I’m still relying on my parent as an adult. What are some first steps that I could take to become more financially independent? submitted by /u/roseeee2 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey all! First post here and in need of some help/advice or ideally wisdom from those who have walked this path before. A little background, I am full time employed, contract, making about 100k/year pre-tax, am the only income in my house, and do my best to live frugally. The challenge I am facing is a credit card that is hovering between $14500-$13500 that I just can't seem to get traction on paying down despite 500-700/month going towards it. My paycheck is $2974 twice a month so take-home is $5948/monthly. I currently pay $2600~/month in rent and utilities(This place is one of the cheaper ..read more

Quit my last job about 1 year ago for a big company altough very bad with their management. Manager texted me to come pick up my last paycheck which was about $350. I was in a bad place and never went to... ikr I am to blame. Is there anything I can do now to go get it? I still have my managers number. I looked at my paycheck through the app. I had 2. The one from my regular hours I got it from my bank account but the one from PTO didn't get it which was the one manager told me to come pick up. submitted by /u/Ok_Anything_2754 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Relocating overseas, am I being irresponsible?

Very complex situation but I will attempt to keep it short, wife is from Portugal, I am 35 and she is 31, we married back in 2017 and she has been living in the US with me since 2018, we also have a 18 month old together. She is a US citizen now and I applied for Portuguese citizenship back in January (wait times are 12-24 months). Over the past few years I have realized she would be happier in Portugal, she misses her family, my family lives far away or isn't as close knit as hers. It's been really hard raising a child alone without much help, she is a stay at home mom and it's 24x7 for both ..read more
