Issues Upgrading to Teams Native mode when using Cloudflare DNS

Recently I ran into an issue upgrading my test Teams tenant from hybrid Skype4B mode to Teams only mode. When running Grant-CsTeamsUpgradePolicy -PolicyName UpgradeToTeams -Global I was getting an error advising that one of my domains was currently homed on a Skype for Business deployment, interestingly a domain that has never had Skype4B on it. This wasn’t an IP address I recognised, but I had assumed it was the WebDir from Office365. I checked the DNS config on the domain in question, and it was indeed pointing to Office365 as I expected. A check of the Whois info for the address showed ..read more

A Quick and Nasty Way to Measure Number Ranges

Do you, like me, need to migrate large swaths of PSTN numbers from your existing telephony solution to Microsoft Teams or similar? Do you have a massive list of numbers you need to plan for migration? and let me guess, the best you can get from the carrier or the incumbent PBX vendor is a list of numbers? I’m personally working on a more elaborate function to add to UcmPsTools, but I figured I’d throw this up here for now. This script will run through all the numbers in “Samplenumbers.txt” and count the unique 1000 number and 100 number blocks. Once that’s finished, it will run through each of ..read more

Teams Phone Handsets, Native, SIP and 3PIP compared!

My meeting background, and collection of phones In a previous post. you might have noticed I was pretty excited to see that the SIP Gateway for Microsoft Teams has launched. While limited, this allows for a ton of customers to re-use their existing fleets of supported handsets. One of the things I have been asked a few times by my customers is “Should I keep my phones on 3PIP or move them over to SIP?” 12 months ago, my answer would have been no. But there have been considerable improvements to the SIP gateway that it is now (mostly) on par with 3PIP bar a few features. Calendar / One Touch M ..read more

Ah yes, referencing an early 2000’s NetNanny meme in my opening? I’m sure it makes a nice change from my normal content. I’m pretty sure this meme is older than some of my audience. Welcome back to UcMadScientist. Today we are talking about Microsoft Teams and Cordless Phone handset solutions. For the longest time since the launch of Teams calling. Customers have been looking at replacing their cordless devices such as Spectralink Kirk devices they used on Skype for Business or other PBX with something rugged that works with Microsoft Teams. Up until now, their options were limited to using an ..read more

Ahh the joy’s of lifting legacy AD accounts into Office365… Set-MsolUser : Uniqueness violation. Property: ProxyAddresses. If you’re here, you have probably searched for the above error message when attempting to assign a “MCOEV” (“Microsoft Teams Phone Standard” at the time of writing) or maybe even some other license to a user via the MSOL PowerShell module and getting the error message “Uniqueness violation. Property: ProxyAddresses” Or maybe you’re attempting this in the O365 Admin Center and getting an error message like this. The email address Button.Mash@ucmadscientist.com is being used ..read more

Teams Phone “Paging” is here?

It’s no secret that Microsoft has been working hard on improving the Teams calling experience, especially for handsets over the last few months. As part of What’s New in Microsoft Teams | February 2022 update, Microsoft announced that Walkie Talkie had finally come to Teams Phone Edition. This was thought to be the nail in the coffin for dodgy hacks like this, this, and this (Sorry Greig) when we saw it on the roadmap. Offering a fully supported, certified paging solution for Teams Phone right? Sorta. (not really) Why do we need Paging? One of the big missing features from Teams Phone has bee ..read more

Local Logging on Sonus/Ribbon SBC1000 without an ASM? Can we add it?

This was an article I was working on whilst reverse engineering a Sonus SBC that ended up electrocuting me. So I’ve kinda fallen out of love with the project for now, Part 2 in the future? Maybe. For those that aren’t aware of Sonus/Ribbon devices, many SBCs include a small internal log cache for troubleshooting. You simply download these and import them into your favourite analysis tools like LX or “NewSyslog” (Great name Audiocodes…) or maybe even my Search-UxCallLog utility. Handy for when you cant install LX somewhere or you just want to check translation rules. But there are times, especi ..read more

Reverse Engineering the new Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway – Part 1

It here. it’s here. it’s finally here! The long-awaited SIP gateway for Microsoft Teams is here. Note: This is a deeply technical article on how the SIP Gateway provisioning service works, if you’re just looking to get your SIP phones working, Martin Boam has a great article over here Unfortunately, despite my begging, I didn’t get into the preview program on this one, so when this post appeared on the Microsoft Teams blog announcing the feature. The fact that everything was so neatly managed with Microsoft’s own provisioning server for each of the phones was exciting… Until I noticed there w ..read more

Recovering a Sonus/Ribbon ASM with no OS on it

Ever bricked an ASM before? Maybe it was a bad ASM upgrade, maybe you replaced the hard drive in there, or maybe you were stupid enough to Install Doom on it. The issue with any of these is, it breaks the ASM’s SBC Communication Module and the built-in Recovery partition which when looking at the recovery options, is required to Reflash the ASM Recovery Partition It should be noted here, that this method is totally not supported, and does not support live updating from within the SBC itself as this doesn’t replace the “Recovery” partition with the Ribbon imaging software on it. I’ll update th ..read more

More MCOValidationErrors and chasing squirrels in ADSIEdit

The experienced around here know an article is going to be good when I mention ADSI edit. But for those that don’t know, ADSI edit is one of the more dangerous Active Directory tools allowing Administrators to edit things directly, even if they have no idea what that means. I hear a lot about how Linux is so powerful because it doesn’t hold your hand and lets you do whatever you want. Windows has stuff like that too… it’s just intentionally hidden from “Google-Fu” admins, and ADSIEdit is one such tool. Anyway, First off, a bit of background. A customer of mine had a series of 4 common area ph ..read more
