In the previous bear story, I explained my reaction to my first bear encounter. Which would be most people’s reaction. “They WILL eat you”. Well actually, the national annual average for fatal bear attacks in the US is 3. Yes, you are more like to get killed by a dog attack, 26 fatal dog attacks on average. Usually, even with a fatal bear attack, it’s not because they want to eat you its because they are protecting themselves or their babies. Biologist will tell you bears eat roots, berries, grass, bark, fish and animal carcasses that have been dead for ..read more

First encounter     When mentioning bears, most people freak. I will admit my first encounter with a bear was similar to most people’s reaction. It was the fall of 2001 and I was 6 years old, playing in the backyard with the dog. When the hair stood up on the back of my neck. I looked across the property to see a big round tan, furry, snarling creature. In my mind I thought it was over, I was done for, but my last thought was that I was going to at least fight to the death. In a millisecond I took off screaming for the house. The dog must have been confused, and decided it ..read more

Mama’s Antenna

My Mama, when it comes to shooting is quite deadly and is naturally good at shooting a firearm. She can go months without shooting and then pick one up, and put us all to shame. This circulates in my brain whenever I piss her off. But one very cold fall day, way back into the mountains of the Bitterroots we were driving through fresh snow when we came to a stop to find 3 grouse in the road. Yes, grouse being one of the easiest animals to hunt, they stood there and watched us. My Mom hopped out of the passenger seat and rested the barrel of the 10- 22 in between the door and the cab of the truc ..read more

My senior year of high school my dad and I both got drawn for doe and buck antelope tags. This year was a little more special to us. This was the last year I would be going before I went off to college. I would still end up meeting my dad to go hunting but it wasn’t the same. Skipping school, loading up hunting gear and camping gear, my mother would pack us just about half of the local grocery store in food … just in case. The chevy truck with the topper was packed with everything you could imagine plus pulling the 4-wheeler on the trailer. Like I said this year was different we drove 127 mile ..read more

The (C) antelope Chronicles *When I took Hunter’s Safety many years back, a boy from my class would only identify a pronghorn as a Cantaloupe. From then on everyone in the class joked and referred to them as cantaloupe. Therefore, the next couple short stories are called the (C)antelope Chronicles.* Sarah’s Lead Mine Between my dad and I we do a lot of hunting but we LIVE for antelope hunting, it’s the hardest but the most fun hunts we go on. Every year we put in to get drawn down in the Big Hole Valley of Montana. We wait until August 1st and it’s like Christmas, I wake up, full of excitement ..read more

Flathead Lake Monster

The Loch Ness Monster is a mythical creature that I actually believe in–why you may ask? There are plenty of prehistoric fish on this planet and the Loch Ness Monster has to be the most likely out of all the myths. Flathead Lake in northern Montana also has several monsters at the bottom of it and the jokes are of a similar creature as Nessie. Last summer in the heat of early August, we went with our good friend ”Scootie” on his new fishing boat to Flathead Lake. We heard the whitefish feed was picking up and we decided that catching enough fish to make our arms hurt sounded like a lot of fun ..read more

Firsts for my Best Friend

I would say I have three best friends, but for this blog post I am going to talk about one in particularly. My freshman year of college I walked into a 300+ person lecture hall and out of those 300 I didn’t know a single person. I stood in the doorway causing a traffic jam and made eye contact with Maddie, and for some reason I chose to sit next to her. Luckily for me we had every single class together. Still to this day I am putting up with her bull shit. If I hadn’t had a hunch to sit next to her that day I wouldn’t have had the ..read more

On our Lake Powell trip in 2014 I started saying “we don’t have vacations we have adventures”. To this day it’s true, something always happens that was not planned. Sometimes it comes to down to life and death, but only sometimes… I seriously wonder if other people have these experiences, or if it is just my family.             South of Hamilton about 30 mins is a small lake called Como. Being the closest body of water you can put a motorized boat on it is also the most popular. …. Years ago, my dad had bought a trolling motor for our litt ..read more

How to properly go on a “real” elk hunt.

Now most of you will think to properly pack out an elk you must quarter it and walk it out…. No no, you’re doing it wrong. I grew up in western Montana in a very narrow canyon, so narrow that when my dad got an elk in the winter he would tie a rope around its neck or put it on an old car hood and drag it down to the road. Then, he would take the Chevy truck and back it up with the tailgate down and make it flush to the hillside and slide the elk right into the back of the truck. Done deal, and no meat wasted. Well, the 13 year old brat that I was had seen elk hunting videos and knew that’s not ..read more
