Julian Gray entering the transfer portal

Photo by Lance King/Getty Images Best of luck, sir. NC State receiver Julian Gray announced yesterday that he’ll be hitting the portal once it opens on Tuesday. Gray participated in the Wolfpack’s spring game earlier this month. It’s tough to lose a potential impact guy in the return game, but it’s also not clear how much playing time he would have gotten at receiver in the fall, given the significant talent overhaul that State made at that position. NC State brought in three guys who’ll play ahead of him—Welsey Grimes, Noah Rogers, Justin Joly—and when you throw in KC Concpecion and Dacari Co ..read more

Photo by Carmen Mandato/Getty Images If you’re from my generation of NC State fans—let’s call us the, uh, distinguished millennials—then your formative Wolfpack sports memories likely center around Philip Rivers and Julius Hodge. Rivers and Chuck Amato basically created State football culture out of thin air, while Hodge got the basketball team back in the NCAA tournament after a decade of squalor, and with both of those programs suddenly finding success at the same time, it was like we’d won the lottery. But let me tell you about everything else. I was in the Student Wolfpack Club in college ..read more

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports Back-and-forth series opener results in NC State breaking a five-game skid NC State picked up a big - and much needed - win on Friday night at Clemson, topping the #2 Tigers by a final tally of 11-8. The victory breaks the Wolfpack’s five-game losing streak and puts them two games above .500 in ACC play. The loss is only the fifth of the year for Clemson, the top ranked team in the country via RPI. With an unusual lineup, State got on the board first when 3-hole hitter Josh Hogue took Clemson starter Matthew Marchal deep to right field in the top of the first ..read more

NC State at No. 7 in Directors’ Cup following basketball season

Photo by Lance King/Getty Images The NC State basketball teams’ twin Final Four runs were worth plenty of Directors’ Cup points, which is I’m sure all you could think about while they were happening. Sure, the wins are nice, but think of the Directors’ Cup points! And they have indeed paid off. NC State is No. 7 in the latest standings after taking the basketball results into account—behind Stanford, Texas, UNC, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, in that order. Led by hoops, State’s winter sports score was fourth nationally, with men’s and women’s swimming, women’s indoor track and field, a ..read more

Kam Woods enters the portal

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports Kam Woods’ career at NC State ultimately amounted to a cameo, as he didn’t become eligible to play—thanks to a court ruling on multi-time transfers—until December, and never managed to carve out a spot in the rotation. His most impactful performance in a State uniform came against Tennessee, which also happened to be his season debut, when he scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes. He clocked double-digit minutes just three more times after that, and did not play in the Pack’s final eight games. It’s not surprising that he would seek more playin ..read more

NC State women finish at No. 4, men at No. 10 in AP Poll

Photo by Lance King/Getty Images NC State’s basketball teams both finished in the top 10 of the final AP Poll—it’s the first time in history that’s happened. The women’s team was rewarded with a No. 4 final ranking, marking the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Wolfpack has finished in the top 10 (and the third time in the top five). The men finished at No. 10, which is that program’s first top-10 finish since 1975. The last time both programs made the final AP Poll in the same season was 1989, and as you’ve probably figured, the long drought is due to the men’s team’s struggles. Bet ..read more

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports Oh hey, football. Grayson McCall and a bunch of other new faces introduced themselves to Wolfpack fans for the first time on Saturday afternoon, and the results were impressive. The Red Team, made up of the first-stringers, romped to a 51-7 victory, and the upgrades at receiver and running back were on display early. The backs, led by Jordan Waters, were impressive, and it’s easy to see the substantial improvement in quality that State has on hand there now. Waters picked up several chunk plays early, while Hollywood Smothers got loose around midfield and showed off ..read more
