Its’s just really good – Jads Anyone whose followed this blog for a while will be able to observe a complicated relationship between myself (and thus the entire Newplex as I’m the cultural tastemaker here…) and pro wrestling – especially WWE. If you go all the way back to 2017 when we launched The Newplex, the vast majority of our content was wrestling-related, but as WWE continued its self-sabotaging shenanigans, our patience and interest has eroded to the point where wrestling coverage has shrunken to a niche category on this site. For myself, so much has WWE irked me in recent years that it ..read more

With Chris Jericho being crowned “Le Champion” of AEW and Riho becoming the first ever Women’s champion, there is one last major championship vacancy to fill for AEW; the Tag Team championships. Over the last several weeks there has been continued build for the tag team division, whether it has been through exhibitions, turns, or Escalante de la Muerte matches. With Private Party having a massive upset win over the Young Bucks, the field is now wide open for any team to be crowned the inaugural champions. With that, let’s look at the upcoming matches and fantasy book where we would go from the ..read more

After Hell in a Cell, what will it take to bring me back to the WWE universe?

You may have noticed, loyal readers, that the amount of wrestling content on this website has dipped considerably over the last year or so. Indeed once upon a time, I used to write a WWE blog every week. Can you imagine? Having some story point or upcoming match to theorise, analyse, or otherwise chat about every single week. I used to relish in writing posts like these, which while unlikely even at the time had an air of tantalising possibility. Now, a couple of year on, and there is simply no joy in writing about wrestling – and last night’s Hell in a Cell only compounded that. At this point ..read more

5 things I want in the AEW video game
The Newplex » Wrestling
by JOPO

So I was watching AEW’s All Out the other night with fellow Plexian, Jads, and I thought to myself (as Jads kept falling asleep*) “WHAT IF… these larger than life athletes were also video game characters?”. Since then, the rumours of a planned AEW video game have been all but confirmed by Kenny Omega at a fan Q&A – so here are five features that I would want AEW to include in their first video game. 1. Custom music If my memory serves me correctly, back in WWE 13 we had the ability to import custom theme music. A unique and fun feature that allowed us to add another layer of customisation ..read more

Double or Nothing (oh – so pretty, much beauty)

Jads and JOPO chat all things AEW Double or Nothing to open this episode of the Team Newplex Podcast. We’re talking favourite matches, best moments, and doing everything in our power not to compare it to WWE (and failing miserably). After that, we wake up Charles to talk about Dark Phoenix – and how the ending was reshot – and we break down the complicated notion of the “social contract” (incorrectly). All Elite Wrestling and ITV have today announced that AEW Double or Nothing will be broadcasting on ITV Box Office’s channel on Saturday 25th May inside the United Kingdom. Additionally, the hour-long preshow Buy-In, which features the first Casino Battle Royale, will be shown for free on ITV4 at midnight. Will AEW’s weekly show be on ITV? While ITV have only announced Double or Nothing on Box Office so far, in their official press release they announced themselves as being in a ‘partnership’ with AEW, which does suggest something longer term. Whether this means they’ll just carry future PPVs ..read more

What was your last great WrestleMania match?
The Newplex » Wrestling
by Jads

I was just reading this interesting article in Forbes, in which the writer points out how every WrestleMania in recent history has highlighted the same problem in WWE. Which one, am I right? But specifically, the problem of not creating new stars. Every year, WWE tries to sell WrestleMania off names which, many would argue, come from a better time in WWE’s product. Triple H, Batista, Kurt Angle, and Brock Lesnar, just to name a few. All in matches last Sunday, none members of the active roster on WWE’s programming. And this creates a problem. Aside from contributing to a ridiculous running tim ..read more
