Following on from the success of the ‘In Our Words’ book which features the stories of people diagnosed with non epileptic seizures, we have been asked to take part in a project for a follow up book. The new book will feature the personal experiences of health professionals from all disciplines around the world who are involved in the diagnosis, treatment and support of people diagnosed. The researchers for this project say: “Taking care of patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (NES) can produce a mixture of emotions among health care professionals. The condition is still characteri ..read more

Some time ago, we asked our members to take part in a project  compiling the stories of people who live with non epileptic seizures. Lots of people contributed and the result is this excellent book. FND Action was invited to write one of the forewords. Hopefully, this will become a ‘must read’ not just for those diagnosed but also for health and allied professionals. Get your copy here. Get Involved: Research into NEAD
Non Epileptic Attack Disorder

Research is so important as it leads to a better understanding of the condition and hopefully to better and more effective treatments. Ongoing research projects in which you may like to participate include one which assesses how different self-perceptions (self-compassion, gratitude, perfectionism) are related to how individuals with epilepsy and non-epileptic attack disorder cope with their seizures. Another project is looking into whether ACT (Acceptance and Commitment therapy) is likely to be more effective for people with NEAD than CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Grounding Techniques (Updated)
Non Epileptic Attack Disorder

When a seizure is about to happen, you go into what is known as a dissociative state. You may feel as if you are detached from your surroundings or as if the room is moving around, or just get a feeling of unreality. Not everyone gets this kind of feeling, sometimes known as an ‘aura’. As a way to combat that weird feeling and to try and stop the seizure from occurring, you can try sensory grounding. If you don’t get a warning then grounding probably won’t work for you. This is a way of bringing your focus back into the present moment. Understanding and Improving Your Skills at Grounding: (Thi ..read more

One of our Facebook group members came up with a great checklist for getting the most out of your neurology appointment. Thanks Nicole! 1) Write a description of your attacks in advance with as much detail as possible about any auras, what goes on during them, what you experience and what happens post seizure and get an eye witness account written down about the same thing and let the doctor read it. 2) Make sure to discuss any other medical conditions you have been diagnosed with to make sure there is not a link between your seizures and one of those. 3) Bring someone who has seen your seizur ..read more

A new research project has been announced by Dr Christopher Graham of the University of Leeds into the possible connection between sleep problems and NEAD and FND. “This study investigates whether people with functional neurological disorders (FND), including those with dissociative seizures/non-epileptic attacks, experience particular problems with sleep. We also want to see if poor sleep affects FND symptoms. We are doing this research because we think it might help us develop new treatment options for FND.” For more information and to take part, please click here.  The post New Researc ..read more
