Die Hard Miniatures Eru-Kin based to Midgard rules: part 1.

Now I quite like the new Midgard rules, and had been fairly busy basing my Mithril Orc army in accordance to their basing. I like the multiple basing, and the idea of having hero miniatures on individual, but more heroic, almost scenic, bases. As a personal rule of thumb I have decided to base Army Commanders (and mounted heroes) on 50mm round bases (when I base some goblins and dwarves I shall add standard bearers, musicians, etc to the bases as well), and dismounted heroes on 40mm bases. I like the room it gives the miniatures. If anyone is unfamiliar with Midgard (which I am still yet ..read more

The return of the Ral Partha Phoggs!

This blog update is a bit of cheat really. I painted the Phroggs a few months ago, and started a draft blog update about them, but put the update on the back burner for later. It's now later and things haven't quite gone to plan. I had been finishing off the prep work for my 3rd Edition Chaos Dwarves, and had started a major basing project for my Mithril Miniatures Orc army in line with the new Midgard rules. However, I am very ill. I was very, very busy over Xmas, and then for the last three weeks I have had flu (been in bed for a lot of the time, not eating, sleeping erratically, etc) whic ..read more

A few Iron Claw Goblins.

Finally I have got around to painting some goblins! I chose some Iron Claw range goblins from 1987/8  because I really love the detailing on them, and they are really fun to paint. Like all of Bob Olley's sculpts, the detailing is awesome, although I do acknowledge that some of his ranges don't always seem to work, nor is his sculpting to everyone's taste. Still, I love the goblins he sculpted for Citadel, although at the time I didn't really like them. However, it's the detailing, and something about the goblin mischief in the faces which I love.  When painting I wanted an unusual ..read more

Ironclad Miniatures War of the Martian War Machine (Tripod).

Something a little more unusual. I have always liked H G Well's 'War of the Worlds' and the iconic Martian Tripods, as well as having a passing interest in the Steampunk genre. Now in my idle curiosity I searched for a Martian Tripod miniatures, and whilst there were all sorts of smaller scale versions or 1950's/ Tom Cruise War of the Worlds/Justin Hayward versions, I chanced across another, older styled version. This older version is based partly on HG wells own sketch, and was then illustrated more formally later (1902) by Alvim Correa The model kit can be found for sale at Ironclad ..read more

Bob Olley Iron Claw/Essex Miniatures Undead.

Something ghostly for Halloween: Undead. These undead were sculpted in the 1980s by Bob Olley, and are from his time at both Essex Miniatures (this range is still in production) and at Games Workshop as Iron Claw Miniatures. I am aware that Bob Olley's sculpting can divide opinion, however I quite like how he has sculpted these Undead, and both ranges fit nicely together. Incidentally, some of the Essex Miniatures are a mix of Skeletons and Zombies from their Undead range. A few of these miniatures I had painted a little while ago, however I wasn't a 100% happy with them and so I modif ..read more

A short update. I have been painting a selection of random things, including some Iron Claw Goblins (finally, I've got around to painting some Goblins!!!), but more on that in another blog post. I haven't had time to photograph and blog about a lot of things which I have been painting or basing. However, I have finished basing the extra spiky Chaos Dwarfs with an eye to paint them all over November. Anyway, here are a few Earth Elementals which I just wanted to paint. Enjoy :) Citadel C34 Earth Elemental from 1984. Rear view. Ral Partha ES45 Earth Demon Hurling Rock, from their 'Persona ..read more

Grenadier Miniatures Undead Army.

At the start of my collecting it wasn't always Citadel Miniatures I opted for.  When I started in 1986 Grenadier Miniatures were always an option. I still clearly recall visiting Beaties and Gamleys in Brighton and Hove as a young goblin and seeing all these other interesting miniatures with their different sculpting style and vibe. On my 13th birthday in 1987 I was given money to 'go buy something you want', and with that I purchased several blister packs of Grenadier 'Fantasy Lords' undead, to add to the few random Grenadier miniatures I had already (as an aside, I started a part ..read more

(Extra) Spiky Chaos Dwarfs.

Over the summer I have been concerned with several different projects, dipping into one or another as time went by. One of these has been my 2nd/3rd edition Warhammer Chaos Dwarfs. Here is a link to the range: http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Chaos_Dwarfs Whilst making steady progress with others things, I decided to tackle a range of miniatures which I have always liked, Citadel's C16/D3 Chaos Dwarfs from the 1980s. Now I have painted some of these in differing styles of the years, but I have never found the look I really wanted. Anyway, I sat down an thought ..read more

'The Book of Battalions': Peasants and archers of Prince Wilhelm's expedition.

Now due to recent family events and other shenanigans, I have been in the curious situation of having lots of time and opportunity to paint, but very little time to actually sit down and blog about it! In fact, I have been painting a lot of varied and eclectic things, and have a backlog of photographing to do. Now my current distraction is a project which I have wanted to start for a while, which is collecting and painting each of the armies in the 1st Edition Forces of Fantasy books supplement, 'The Book of Battalions'. Now there are eleven armies in the book, ranging from Goblins to Dw ..read more

A final and quick update on my 4th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle/Warhammer: The Old World Chaos Dwarfs. I painted these about a month ago and I haven't had the time to upload them to the blog until now. Since these I have been painted a few old Rogue Trader things, some old Perry Twins/Wargames Foundry C26 Medievals, as well as assembling and basing some Diehard Miniatures Eru-Kin, and Citadel C32 Slann. There's a lot of Slann. Anyway, back to the Chaos Dwarfs. I love this range now (despite disliking it in the 1990s), and I learnt the appreciate the later Forge World (RIP!) range as ..read more
