I’ve been into Ultramodern Wargaming for almost 10 years at this point, from the first figures ordered in a Dundee student flat to running this blog and spending a lot of time talking, writing, painting, playing and thinking about wargaming. That’s a lot of time to gather a lot of rules, a lot of scenery and a lot of figures. And if there are two things I’ve learn over that time: There are too many Ultramodern Wargamers who play just to have Operators with all the gear wiping out hordes of under-equipped insurgents like it’s still 2004 without engaging with how Ultramodern Warfare has actual ..read more

Hey so remember how last week was an absolutely massive bumper edition? Well, it seems like it may have affected the tides of content because this week is much quieter! With the fewest items I’ve had for a while, I had to include the same company twice in the header image! Anyway, on with the news! Support ChargeBlog on Patreon! April has well and truly begun, complete with our first April showers (I’m writing this as a storm pelts the window). But that doesn’t mean we don’t have a pile of new updates from the world of Ultramodern Gaming – as well as a few other things that had to be included. It appears to be Kickstarter Season! As much as I wanted to start this week’s News Stand with an April Fools, Warlord Games frankly went over the top with the sheer number of them. Instead, I can promise you a post without a single fake entry, instead bringing you a pile of new releases, previews and more! Support ChargeBlog on Patreon! ChargeReal Project 1: Building Shyluz
ChargeBlog - Adventures in Wargaming

You might have heard the name Shyluz being thrown around a fair amount on the blog. If you aren’t aware, this is the fictional setting for the first ChargeReal book, a deep dive that will detail its geography, and political intrigue but more importantly how it can be used for wargaming. However, before we can play in the Republic of Shyluz, Shyluz must first be created. And created from scratch – although Shyluz does share a border with Bazistan, simply dropping the pieces I have for Middle East/North Africa into it wouldn’t really be suitable, especially seeing as I picture Northern Shyluz b ..read more

This year I’ll have been wargaming for 10 years. Over that time I’ve been lucky to be able to afford a significant chunk of items for my hobby, ranging from figures to terrain and even to tools such as my 3D printers. The hobby is something I really enjoy (and I think the fact this post is my 700th might clue you into how much I enjoy all this wargaming nonsense). However, as with any hobby project you run for 10 years there comes a time when you need to downsize, to focus on what you actually want to use. Over this year I’m going to work through different parts of the collection and work out ..read more

The Dastardly Regular Opponent and I live roughly 45 minutes away from each other – a little too far for a school night game but perfect for me to nip over on a Saturday evening. We’re aiming for at least one game day a month which so far we’ve managed to hit. When I gave him the options for this session, he moved rather quickly to sign up for another game of What An Operator – in part because we both enjoy ultramodern stuff but also because he’s fresh off running a few games of What A Cowboy derivatives (mostly underhive gangers) for his scout group. Now knowing a game just enough to get you ..read more

AAR: Sergi and Ivan in Trouble (What An Operator)
ChargeBlog - Adventures in Wargaming
by Michael Charge

In the last AAR I wrote, I was introducing the Corporate and Dastardly Regular Opponents to What an Operator, a variant of What A Cowboy. Well, there is another regular opponent who needed his introduction to the current game as the Former Housemate is someone who usually lightly suffers through my Ultramodern games while dreaming of his true love Necromunda (although actually, I assume he spends most of his time dreaming of Necromunda). However, he always enjoys a chance to roll some dice, play some games and usually get away with some madness. So, after a Thai Green Curry and good catchup ..read more
